Match report by Gary Kingett
Low Moor was the seting for the annual BDP Top 32 play offs. After numerous tournaments and over 400 competitors, the field was whittled down to 32 players. There was a good crowd and a great atmosphere. As the first round matches got underway, Les Delderfield the reigning 2007 champion was an early casualty as the players went toe to toe, with great scoring and big finishing. There were some great darts on show as the field reached the last 8, which went as follows:
John Townsend 3 Gary Kingett 0
Gary Thompson 3 Andy McCracken 2
James Barton 3 Brian Harrison 1
Brian Dawson 3 Dave Wilson 2
So on to the semi-finals:
First up was John Townsend taking on ‘The Cougar’ Gary Thompson, this one going to Gary 3 legs to 2.
Gary score 2425 darts 94 one dart average 25.79% 3 dart average 77.39%
John score 2191 darts 93 one dart average 23.55% 3 dart average 70.67%
2nd semi final
Brian Dawson v James Barton – this one going to Brian 3 legs to 0
Brian score 1503 darts 63 one dart average 23.12% 3 dart average 69.36%
James score 1403 darts 65 one dart average 22.62% 3 dart average 66.80%
To be honest, with more pressure on the players, the semi finals were a disappointment by the usual standards of the 4 players involved. The tension mounted as we moved on to our 2008 BDP final. A good crowd gathered and there was a great atmosphere.
The final was a much better game as Brian Dawson really raised his game to become B.D.P. champion for 2008 and his win was thoroughly deserved. The game went as follows:
Brian Dawson 4 Gary Thompson 1
Brian score 2394 darts 79 one dart average 30.30% 3 dart average 90.91% 2 x 180, 2 x 140, 8 x 100
Gary score 2000 darts 78 one dart average 25.64% 3 dart average 76.92%
There was a new trophy donated by Brian Dawson’s dad for the often over-looked ranking points winner this year, which was won by the consistent Gary Kingett.
This trophy will be won every year from now on.
Our semi’s and final were marked and refereed very professionally by Sunny Kumar and Gary Kingett.
So, another great year of darts ended, with Brian Dawson as our champion for 2008. The standard of play this year at our tournaments has gone through the roof as the BDP goes from strength to strength. Thanks must go to our hard-working committee who work tirelessly putting up boards, doing the draw, and making sure our competitions run smoothly. A big thank you from all the players.
We look forward to another great year of darts, see you at the oche!
