A trip back to the spiritual home of BDP, back in Bradford where it all began around a decade or so ago, fitting that one of the early pioneers of BDP, Dave Waide was present today to see the progress made since those early days. Once again the fixture clashed with York Darts Promotions who like BDP have a quality set up too so sometimes the players are spoilt for choice on these occasions. The attendance of 107 the lowest of the season so far with maybe not as many local players as expected turning out, still the playing room upstairs at The Harold Club is a tight one with little room for manoeuvre especially in the passage way behind the oche on Boards 4 to 8 which can create a distraction for players at times. Decent bar service and food behind the small counter but still not sure if the venue is big enough to hold The Grand Finals in December especially in the top room.

Daniel Roberts (22.88) v Jason Stockings (20.45), the first game of the day to be shouted on Board 1 and not a bad encounter as Daniel came out on top with a 3-1 victory, very steady scoring from the young Huddersfield student who looks like a cross between Harry Potter and PDC star and former BDO World Champion Mark Webster as he hit 8 x 100 pluses in the game, 6 x 100 pluses for Jason, with spiky hair and tattoo’s down both arms he looks more like an International Rockstar than a darts player, still the match could have turned out differently for him had he converted any one of 6 darts at a tricky Double 7 to make it 1-1 rather than 2-0 down which gave him too much to do in the end. Chris Courtman (18.87) alongside Brendan Marren is a contender for the ‘Nicest Guy in the World’ accolade, however nice guys don’t always win as Chris went down 3-0 in a rematch with Brendan Dawson (22.77), only 1 x 100 for the ponytailed Gardener but 9 other scores over 80 kept Chris under the cosh although the man now resident in Castleford should have taken Leg 2 missing 9 darts at Double 8. A late arrival for Dave Broxup (18.72) meant he went into his match with Darren Cartwright (18.16) cold, fortunately for him the Halifax Delivery Driver couldn’t deliver on the Doubles despite being cheered on by the family and Dave got away with an unconvincing 3-1 victory. Bradford’s Phil Morley (20.59) a Tesco Line Manager hit 6 x 100′s and checked out in 26, 24 and 23 darts to register a 3-0 win over Josh Scales (18.59), the Wakefield star, a dead ringer for Blackpool striker Gary Taylor-Fletcher just couldn’t hit the target today with only 2 x 100 plus scores in the game. Comfortable 3-0 wins too for Paul Doherty (20.87) over James Neal and Simon Wintle (23.48) in an impressive display over Mark Gale (19.63). Easily the best performance of the recorded games coming from Willie Kershaw (31.31) as he swept aside Steve Hattersley (20.39) in 17, 14 and 17 darts including a 177 and a 180 with razor sharp finishing to post intent early.

ROUND 2

Daniel Roberts 3-1 Chris Namnieks
Ian Ward 3-0 Steve Kelly
James Barton 3-0 Jamie Ogley
Dave Broxup 3-2 Paul Doherty
Tom Sykes 3-0 Les Delderfield
Simon Wintle 3-1 Phil Morley
Paul Hick 3-0 Dave Murray
James Wilson 3-0 John Richardson
Paul Toulmin 3-1 Danny Wilkes
Rich Winpenny 3-2 Peter Rebanks
Willie Kershaw 3-0 Sam Hastings
Mark Wainwright 3-2 Brendan Dawson
Kelvin Pease 3-2 Alex Pride
Rob Richardson 3-0 Bob Brett
Aaron Poole 3-0 Ian Payne
Dave Wilson 3-0 Shirley Sanderson
Mark Hanslip 3-1 Pat Blakely
Trevor Tye 3-0 Ian Brown
Brendan Marren 3-0 Tom Blagg
Peter Armitage 3-0 Laura Tye
Bryan Harrison 3-0 Peter Baker
Darren Hale 3-0 Steve Fowler
Mark Feath'stone 3-0 Scott Smith
John Utting 3-0 Louise Simmonds
Graham Hoggarth 3-0 Paul Priestland
Tony Farrow 3-1 Jonathan Daniels
Bob Pinder 3-1 Andrew Clifford
John Clifford 3-2 Mick Hayward
Russell Murphy 3-1 Leah Wiltshire
Lewis Pride 3-0 Gary O'Donnell
Lyndon Baxter 3-1 Nigel Atkinson
Jamie Ingle w/o Jonathan Hewitt

Cup cake Queen Louise Simmonds (16.19) had her chances in 2 of the legs against John Utting (20.88) but couldn’t take them as the Doncaster player shaded them along with a runaway 16 dart middle leg to claim a 3-0 victory. Lewis Pride (21.47) so mature for a 15 year old looks like being a major player for years to come, a slow deliberate throw and unruffled temperament makes him hard to beat as Gary O’Donnell (20.19) found out after a 3-0 defeat, 5 x 100 pluses giving Lewis the edge in that game. Rich Winpenny (28.33) had to produce his best darts to see off Skipton’s Pete Rebanks (25.14) in a high scoring battle, 11 x 100 pluses and 9 scores over 80 for ‘The Boy Rabbit’ but having to come from 2-1 down with a 13 darter to level, then a 17 darter to win it as Pete piled on the pressure with a 180 with his final throw, 10 other scores over 90 in the game too from the West Craven SL star. No doubt about the result of the round though as Castleford youngster Tom Sykes whitewashed Les Delderfield in sensational style hitting a Maximum and a 84 finish on the Bull to seal victory, very rarely does Les lose 3-0 especially in the early stages, the ‘Ginger Ninja’ described jokingly as a ‘Dosser’ by his mates is certainly no slouch on the dart board that’s for sure. The most bizarre game came at the bottom of the draw as Jonathan Hewitt, supremely talented but playing on a short fuse grew frustrated with his game and by the number of times his heels were clipped by passing youngsters as he was in the process of throwing, resulting in a Colin Lloyd style punch to the board which in turn dislodged the wooden packing wedges, with opponent Jamie Ingle unable to throw properly at a moving board, Jonathan knowing he was out of order sportingly conceded the game at 1-0 down at the time.

ROUND 3

Daniel Roberts 3-2 Ian Ward
Dave Broxup 3-2 James Barton
Tom Sykes 3-1 Simon Wintle
James Wilson 3-0 Paul Hick
Rich Winpenny 3-1 Paul Toulmin
Willie Kershaw 3-2 Mark Wainwright
Rob Richardson 3-2 Kelvin Pease
Aaron Poole 3-2 Dave Wilson
Mark Hanslip 3-0 Trevor Tye
Brendan Marren 3-0 Peter Armitage
Bryan Harrison 3-2 Darren Hale
Mark Feath'stone 3-0 John Utting
Graham Hoggarth 3-1 Tony Farrow
Bob Pinder 3-2 John Clifford
Lewis Pride 3-0 Russell Murphy
Lyndon Baxter 3-0 Jamie Ingle

No one knows the mind of a pigeon quite like Dave Broxup, having trained and raced many Champions over the years the Lofthouse ace knows a thoroughbred when he sees one, he also knows how to play darts too as demonstrated with a brilliant do or die 106 finish to beat former PDC star James Barton in the deciding leg. Heartbreak for Mark Wainwright on Board 2 as he hit the 67 required for a 3-2 victory over Willie Kershaw only to discover that he was looking at the wrong column with 52 being the score required, a costly error as Willie took out his finish on the next turn, a real sickener for Mark but could have been avoided if the marker puts a line through the scoring column so only the what’s required figure is clearly visible to the player as in the heat of a game with the brain scrambled this is an easy mistake to make. Dave Wilson’s girlfriend looked dressed for The Bafta’s rather than The Harold Club, her stunning figure hugging dress looking quite amazing, however Dave couldn’t deliver an award winning performance as he went down 3-2 to Aaron Poole who is probably the youngest looking 32 year old in the world. A tough test for Brendan Marren overcome with flying colours as he defeated Townville winner Pete Armitage 3-0, while Bryan Harrison is well and truly back on the scene now after a fine 3-2 win over Daz Hale. A 119 finish on the Bull proved the decisive moment for Rich Winpenny as he beat Paul Toulmin 3-1, while the all Cas battle went just in Rob Richardson’s favour with a 3-2 win over Kelvin Pease.

ROUND 4

Dave Broxup 3-2 Daniel Roberts
James Wilson 3-1 Tom Sykes
Rich Winpenny 3-1 Willie Kershaw
Rob Richardson 3-0 Aaron Poole
Brendan Marren 3-0 Mark Hanslip
Bryan Harrison 3-1 Mark Featherstone
Graham Hoggarth 3-0 Bob Pinder
Lyndon Baxter 3-2 Lewis Pride

Blackburn FC protester Graham Hoggarth hasn’t let the predicament of his football club affect his darts in any way, another excellent day for him continues with a stunning 3-0 win over Bob Pinder, if only Blackburn could perform with the same spirit and desire then maybe they could yet avoid the drop to the Championship. A 180 in leg 4 clinched a 3-1 win for Rich Winpenny over Willie Kershaw with both Bryan Harrison and James Wilson also winning 3-1 to make the Last 8. Brendan Marren yet to drop a leg all day as he beat Mark Hanslip 3-0 and Rob ‘The Jockey’ Richardson’s fine run continued with a 3-0 win over Aaron Poole. The two closest games were at the top and bottom of the draw as Dave Broxup edged out Daniel Roberts 3-2 and Lyndon Baxter the same over Lewis Pride.

QUARTER FINALS

James Wilson 3-0 Dave Broxup
Rich Winpenny 3-1 Rob Richardson
Brendan Marren 3-1 Bryan Harrison
Lyndon Baxter 3-0 Graham Hoggarth

Looking very much at this stage that it was going to take a Herculean effort from any of the other 6 players in the Competition to stop James Wilson and Brendan Marren meeting in the Final with only 1 leg dropped between them all day going into the Quarter Finals. A valiant effort from Dave Broxup (23.93) but not enough to trouble James Wilson (31.98) as he was just too powerful with 16, 17 and 14 dart legs including a 180 in leg 3. Rich Winpenny (22.74) beat Rob Richardson (22.42) 3-1 and maybe slightly fortunate, getting away with winning leg 1 in 26 darts after missing 11 darts at doubles in that leg, then taking out 68 in the leg 3 after Rob missed 8 darts at doubles, then finally stringing a big leg 4 together with 140, 137 and 134 scores to clinch an 18 dart winner. 8 x 100 pluses from both players in a good scoring game. A superb 13 dart leg for Brian Harrison (25.04) but still couldn’t prevent him from slipping to defeat against Brendan Marren (29.00) whose overall consistency with 17, 19 and 17 darters just too good for the Kippax ace this time, a 180 from both players in that game. Sowerby Bridge ace Lyndon Baxter (24.64) always had the upper hand over Graham Hoggarth (21.10) in the last of the QF’s, steady scoring and finishing in legs of 21, 20 and 20 darts got the job done for Lyndon as Graham couldn’t quite find his earlier form but nevertheless a tremendous effort from him today with the prospect of seeing more of him in coming events now that the football season is nearly to a close.

SEMI FINAL 1

James Wilson (34.16) 3-0 (27.31) Rich Winpenny

Rich Winpenny’s effort to try and stop James Wilson was the equivalent of trying to protect a house with sandbags from a giant Tsunami on an unforgiving rampage, as hard as the Woodlesford player tried he just had no answer to the awesome power of the Yorkshire and England International. Probably as complete a performance as could be wished for as the Huddersfield ace took legs in 14, 15 and 15 darts to record a 102.48 average, hitting 1 x 180, 4 x 140′s and 2 x 100 pluses with a 144 checkout thrown in for good measure. Probably against anyone else today Rich may have been in with a decent chance throwing 5 x 100 pluses and other high scores in amongst them, the first 9 dart average of 91.67 was excellent but still paled into insignificance compared to Jamie’s 107.44 ave for his first 9 darts. Another near miss for The Railway SL player after narrowly losing 4-3 in the Final at Hull the week before to qualify for the UK Open but in all truth not an awful lot more he could have done about it today. As for Jamie, the sky looks to be the limit as far as his darts career is shaping up.

SEMI FINAL 2

Brendan Marren (31.98) 3-0 (23.47) Lyndon Baxter

Semi Final 2 proving to be just as emphatic as Semi Final 1 as Brendan Marren turned in another devastating display of power darts to crush the hopes of Lyndon Baxter and set up a dream Final against James Wilson. Little the man nicknamed ‘Alien’ could do as it was Brendan that was on another planet with winning legs in 18, 17 and a brilliant 12 darter to finish the game with a 121 checkout, the only stat missing for Brendan was a 180 but more than made up for it with 3 x 140′s and 6 x 100′s to fully avenge the defeat to Lyndon at Carlton a few weeks previously. A good effort from Lyndon knowing he would have to play like he did at Carlton to have any chance again today and although he couldn’t reproduce that form he still managed to hit 2 x 140′s and 2 x 100′s but wasn’t enough to keep him in contention against an opponent in blistering form.

FINAL

James Wilson (30.36) 4-0 (27.05) Brendan Marren

Everyone’s dream Final with both players on the top of their games with only a solitary leg each dropped on the way. As it turned out the Final didn’t quite live up to expectations as James ran out a convincing winner when most of the crowd expected a closer game. However James won’t be too bothered about that as he produced the goods again hitting the big scores when required to ensure he was at the finish first in most legs. Brendan had the darts but started poorly for him with no Treble 20 in the first 5 visits allowing James in to take the leg in 16 darts with Brendan on 101, the Keighley star never really recovered from that early set back and was always chasing from then on in. James missed 4 darts at Doubles but still held in 20 darts then turned the screw with the best leg of the game to break Brendan again with a fine 13 darter. All to do now for Brendan and he made a concerted effort to get back in the game with 2 x 140′s in leg 4 to give himself a shot at 76 to stay in the match, that was to be his last chance as he missed the Double 18 with his last dart and James made no mistake to wrap up the match with a Single 17 and Double Top for a 17 dart finisher. More 180′s for Jamie as he hit another 2 in this game as well as a 140 and 8 other ton pluses. 2 x 140′s and 6 x 100 pluses for Brendan but the 5 straight 60′s at the start of the game put him firmly on the back foot. A deserved victory on the day for James who showed his class throughout with 30 plus ave’s in his last 3 recorded games and probably averaged around the same in his other 4 games earlier in the day if those performances were anything to go by.

SUMMARY

It’s easy to compare James Wilson to 80′s cartoon character ‘Hong Kong Phooey’. When James turns up at a venue it is usually low key, no fanfare of trumpets or even a silky playing shirt for him, similar to the unlikely cartoon Superhero who doubles up as ‘Henry, the mild mannered Janitor’ quietly mopping floors one minute then when it’s time for action suddenly appearing from a filing cabinet transformed as the all conquering ‘Hong Kong Phooey’ to batter the evil villains into submission, well it’s the same with James really, he morphs from mild mannered Roofer into Superhero Dartplayer as soon as he gets to the oche to batter the opposition into submission with the same kind of power, force and relentlessness. As well as James heroics we had also had all sorts of drama to add to the mix which made for a very eventful day all round. The effort to assemble, dismantle and pack up the equipment can be quite an arduous task so please feel free to help out and assist if possible, especially like today where the kit has to transported up and down stairs, many hands make light work as the saying goes and would be kindly appreciated by the committee.

Another venture across to the East side of West Yorkshire as BDP visited Castleford for the second time this season, this time the popular venue of Townville WMC situated a couple of miles out of the town centre in the suburb of Townville hosted the event. Once again a busy calendar as the BDO German Open, PDC Youth and York Darts events all in full swing on the day meaning a few regular players would be missing as a consequence, even so the attendance of 113 a little disappointing given the high numbers that have turned up here in previous BDP events. Food was provided by a local catering company who set up a large mobile van in the car park area and looked very impressive indeed, with their Chips and Curry Sauce proving to be particularly popular throughout the day.

In the opening batch of games it was local player Richard Watson (25.46) who caught the eye with a very impressive performance to beat Dave Broxup (23.63). The Glasshoughton SL star taking out a 107 finish in leg 3 then opening up leg 4 with a 121 followed by a 180, eventually closing out the match in 18 darts after Dave had pressured the shot with a 180 of his own to leave 28. Shipley’s Mark Hanslip (24.24) has been putting in regular quality practice sessions with the likes of Willie Kershaw and Les Delderfield at their local club, the preparation work seems to be paying off for him with some fine results of late, he had to be on the ball and sharp on the finishing to see off Huddersfield’s Richard Schofield (23.48) who was never far behind in all 3 legs. Nothing short of a disaster for Dave Wilson (17.46) who dominated the scoring against fellow Huddersfield player Paul Hodkin (17.08) but wasted 30 attempts at doubles in 3 legs, most of those on the wire but it just wasn’t his day as Paul virtually stole the victory in 35, 26 and 27 darts, very rarely in BDP would a player win 3-0 with those sort of stats. Elsewhere fine wins for Simon Wintle as he despatched Bryan Harrison 3-1 and Mark Leonard who beat Dave Shore 3-2 to eliminate two very dangerous players early on.

ROUND 2

Bob Pinder 3-1 John Utting
Wayne Woodhouse 3-0 Norman Elliott
Andy Cheeseboro 3-0 Nigel Atkinson

Anil Barot 3-2 Mark Hanslip
Jonny Daniels 3-2 Trevor Tye
Mick Hayward 3-0 Mark Ashby
Steve Kelly 3-0 Tracey Gledhill

A glorious triumph in midweek for Skipton’s Mick Hayward as he came through a field of a hundred or so players at the Speedy Hire event in Leeds to win through to the televised UK Open in Bolton in a couple of months time alongside Danny Dutson and Steve Service, both having participated in BDP tournaments in the past. Not quite happened for Mick as yet in BDP Comps despite some decent performances but he progressed into Round 2 with a 3-0 win over Mark Ashby today. An excellent 14 darter by Pete Armitage (23.39) wrapped up the match after an in and out display against Tony Wort (19.43) who was below par himself after some fine showings in local events at East Leeds, regularly getting to the later stages in Comps. Adam Tooley (23.22) was holding his own at 1-1 against Willie Kershaw (28.24) until the Shipley star upped the ante somewhat with 14 and 16 darters to crush the resistance of the South Leeds player. An unlucky bounce out on a Bull finish cost Jaron Esteve the chance to square the match against Brendan Marren at 2-2, instead the Keighley star took full advantage on the next throw to win 3-1, both players attempted to qualify for the UK Open at the Speedy Hire and would have been among the favourites to do so but both failed to score well enough with 15 darts to progress which shows it is not at all as easy as some would suggest to qualify this way. After two consecutive Semi Finals there was to be no repeat for Alex Pride today as he lost a tight battle 3-2 to Rich Winpenny while son Lewis also in fine form of late also bowed out after a 3-0 defeat to Jonathan Hewitt. More useful points for Rotherham’s Sam Fordham as he continues to impress at BDP with another eye-catching win, this time a 3-2 success over fellow South Yorkshire star Craig Fisher.

ROUND 3

Wayne Woodhouse 3-1 Bob Pinder
Andy Cheeseboro 3-0 Jamie Ogley
Steve Jones 3-1 Sam Fordham
Pete Riley 3-2 Tom Sykes
Tony Marsh 3-0 Pat Blakely
Brendan Marren 3-0 Scott Smith
Les Delderfield 3-0 Paul Hick
Paul Toulmin 3-0 Daniel Roberts
Richard Watson 3-2 Jason Stockings
John Richardson 3-2 James Storey
Gary O'Donnell 3-2 Jonathan Hewitt
Peter Armitage 3-2 Rich Winpenny
Tony Darlow 3-1 Josh Scales
Willie Kershaw 3-0 Brendan Dawson
Jonny Daniels 3-0 Anil Barot
Steve Kelly 3-2 Mick Hayward

Castleford’s Wayne Woodhouse back in action on home soil and serving notice of intent with a fine victory over Bob Pinder to take out the favourite from the top section of the draw with anyone of the remaining players there in with a great chance of reaching the Semi’s at least. One of those players being Andy Cheesborough always a danger man at BDP and looking good after a 3-0 victory over young Jamie Ogley. Timely checkouts of 124 in leg 1 and 74 in the decider won the match for Pete Armitage in a game he really should have lost against Rich Winpenny, the Woodlesford man missing 6 darts at doubles in the opener and then 4 match darts to pay the ultimate price. Jonathan Daniels regularly down to the business end in most competitions, the Darfield player such a steely determined opponent on the oche and very difficult to beat as youngster Anil Barot found out after a 3-0 defeat, the ‘Cuddly Bear’ is also proud of the players he has mentored and gets as much pleasure out of watching them succeed as he does winning his own games. Gary O’Donnell is one such player in the Darfield stable and he had his best result to date at BDP with a fine 3-2 win over Jonathan Hewitt, not too many surprises elsewhere though as Marren, Delderfield, Kelly and Tony Darlow with an exhibition style 125 checkout against Josh Scales all came through their games.

ROUND 4

Wayne Woodhouse 3-0 Andy Cheesebrough
Steve Jones 3-0 Pete Riley
Brendan Marren 3-0 Tony Marsh
Les Delderfield 3-2 Paul Toulmin
Richard Watson 3-2 John Richardson
Peter Armitage 3-0 Gary O'Donnell
Willie Kershaw 3-1 Tony Darlow
Jonny Daniels 3-2 Steve Kelly

Oakwood’s John Richardson (17.57) held in his head in his hands after blowing a great chance to make the Quarter Finals, he was much the stronger on the scoring hitting 8 x 100 pluses to only 1 x 100 from Richard Watson (16.26) who is probably still wondering how he won that game playing as poorly as that, that he did win was really down to the fact that John missed 33 darts at doubles in the legs he lost to virtually hand the game to the Castleford player who will know he needs to find his 1st Round form to have any chance of progressing any further. A decent effort from Gary O’Donnell (24.20) who hit 5 x 100′s and 2 x 95′s but to no avail as Pete Armitage (26.37) blasted back with a big 180 and 2 x 140′s to claim all 3 legs in 21, 16 and 20 darts. No Semi this week for Steve Kelly but he made Jonathan Daniels work hard for his 3-2 win, while on Board 2 Pete Riley’s best run so far this season ended at the hands of fellow Halifax player Steve Jones. A fine showing too from debutant Tony Marsh despite suffering defeat to Brendan Marren who set up a QF clash with Les Delderfield who overcame SL team mate Paul Toulmin in a close match. Willie Kershaw and Wayne Woodhouse the other 2 players in the Last 8 after fine wins over Tony Darlow and Andy Cheesebrough.

QUARTER FINALS

Wayne Woodhouse 3-1 Steve Jones
Les Delderfield 3-2 Brendan Marren
Peter Armitage 3-1 Richard Watson
Willie Kershaw 3-2 Jonathan Daniels

Easy going Wayne Woodhouse (23.55) had taken out a 136 finish in his opening match against John Clifford and followed it up by smashing in a fine 134 finish to wrap up a fairly comfortable 3-1 win over a disappointing Steve Jones (17.38) who was never really in the game after taking a fortunate lead in the opening leg after Wayne had missed 8 darts at doubles. Pete Armitage beat Richard Watson by the same score while the other 2 ties went to the wire with Willie Kershaw just edging out Jonathan Daniels and Les Delderfield clinching victory with a 154 checkout after earlier being on the receiving end of a 156 outshot from Brendan Marren in a top notch encounter between these two legends of BDP darts.

SEMI FINAL 1

Les Delderfield (24.41) 3-1 (22.07) Wayne Woodhouse

Local star Wayne Woodhouse may feel afterwards that he missed a golden opportunity to reach the Final after finding Les Delderfield just a touch erratic in this match compared to his usual sky high standard. The Shipley veteran pinched the opening leg with a punishing 110 finish after Wayne had missed 3 clear darts at Tops, then continued the assault with a 180 start to leg 2, with only a 45 coming back from Wayne on his opening throw the leg looked to be a formality for Les, however he made a real meal of it and couldn’t finish off from 90 with 12 darts to hand Wayne a lifeline which he took in 24 darts. The Castleford star couldn’t make it count though on his own throw hitting only steady scores rather than the big tons he needed, in the meantime Les was struggling himself with a 24, 58, 26 start to the leg before turning to Plan B and attacking the 19′s, the change of tactic paid dividends as he rescued the leg with further scores of 133, 95 and 133 again before finishing the 32 left for a strange looking 19 darter. Les wrapped up the match with the best leg of the game, a steady 18 darter with Wayne’s good scoring in that leg coming just a little too late for him as he was left on 100 after 15 darts. Les strangely inconsistent on the scoring with 6 x 100 pluses including a 180 but hit 7 scores of under 46, far too many for his liking but able to get away with it because Wayne could only manage 2 x 140′s and 2 x 100 scores in 3 figures, although he did look much the steadier player with lots of straight 60′s but was just a bit unfortunate not to land more of them in the Treble 20.

SEMI FINAL 2

Peter Armitage (26.42) 3-2 (23.96) Willie Kershaw

A fine start to the match for Willie Kershaw with a 180 opening throw to engineer a 17 dart break, however his game dipped alarmingly after that and Peter Armitage went on to claim a deserved victory that was perhaps a bit more emphatic than the scoreline suggests. Fine 16 dart legs from the man nicknamed ‘Showtime’ by his kids as they are regularly treated to exhibition darts by him on the practice board in the kitchen at home put him 2-1 up and in total command of the game, an indifferent 4th leg from the man in the hoodie though but he still had 2 darts for the match but allowed Willie back in at 2-2 with an unconvincing 26 darter. Solid scoring of 99, 97 and 95 enabled Pete to finish the match in 19 darts with Willie putting in a late burst of 85, 95 and 100 with his last 3 scores but proved to be too late in the day as Peter made no mistake on Double 10. A total of 6 x 100 pluses for Pete but superbly backed up with 10 other scores in the 80′s and 90′s to keep the pressure on. A rare below par effort in a big game for Willie as he managed 5 x 100 pluses with 4 x 90 odd scores but similarly to Les in the first Semi he hit far too many low scores with 7 of those 45 or under which ultimately cost him the match.

FINAL

Peter Armitage (26.42) 4-1 (25.01) Les Delderfield

A thoroughly professional performance from Pete Armitage as he out scored and out played Les Delderfield to record a convincing 4-1 victory. The opening 2 legs were evenly fought as Pete took the opener in 21 darts followed by a 17 dart riposte from Les. The East Leeds man formally known as ‘The Ragamuffin’ due to his dodgy dress sense then took complete control as he won the next 2 legs more or less unchallenged, both in 18 darts as Les lost his way on the scoring hitting only a single 3 figure score in 11 visits which is most un Les like. The 1997 Winmau World Masters Semi Finalist never ever gives in though and rallied in leg 5 with a 180 but missed a 56 checkout to get back in the game, with Peter now in a ruthless mood and missing very little especially on the finishes the shot at Double Top was a mere formality as he took it with the 1st dart for a 19 dart clincher. Once again rock solid scoring throughout from Peter with 1 x 180 and 7 x 100 pluses, assisted again by 6 x 90 odds with a 88 finish in leg 3 to make it a clinical all round performance. The epic win over Brendan Marren in the QF almost seemed as if it took a lot out of Les as he wasn’t the same player in the Semi or the Final, still a 25 ave not a disgrace by any means as most other players would be reasonably pleased with that but Les sets such high standards that a 25 ave is well below par for him, especially in a Final, a total of 8 x 100 pluses including a 180 with a 95 score for him, usually when things aren’t going so well for Les he switches to 19′s to great effect but in this game he kept faith on the 20′s and for once his judgement didn’t pay off.

SUMMARY

Not a bad days work for Peter Armitage especially as he wasn’t planning on coming today, only a last minute call with the offer of a lift from Mick Dodds diverting him away from the Bookies and into the car, reckon Mick should be claiming at least 25% of the winnings for being so charitable in the first place but he may just have to settle for a pint of Coke instead if he’s lucky! In all seriousness well done to Pete on his 2nd BDP title after Crossgates in 2011 season, no tips needed for him on how to play darts, just on how to fashionable or else ‘The Ragamuffin’ nickname will come back to haunt him.

A trip to Woodbottom Club close to the centre of Shipley for the 7th Comp of the season, the town lying a few short miles North of Bradford and always a difficult and lengthy drive for anyone outside the immediate area, ironically a different story by rail as the train journey from Leeds for instance takes barely 10 minutes compared to a 30 to 40 minute drive. An unfamiliar sight greeted the players on arrival as a white marquee style tent had been erected in the car park to accommodate the darts competition after the Club had double booked a wedding party on the same day. Testing conditions for all players with an uneven floor base and a cold atmosphere inside to start with, although the temperature soon warmed up thanks to a giant fan heater blowing out warm air from the far side of the tent. A small bar at the front of the tent plus plenty of tables and chairs meant the surroundings were as near to normal as it could be. A rare break in the BDO calendar so BDP welcomed back top England players Garry Thompson and James Wilson to join the other 126 players in the draw in what was an excellent turn out given the circumstances and rounding up nicely too on the 128 player draw sheets for our organising duo of Harry Firth and Mick Dodds just to make their job slightly easier for a change.

The 1st Round games can often be tense affairs especially the opening games with players just happy to win regardless of the performance, that was the case for Jamie Ingle ( 18.11 ) as he struggled his way to a 3-0 win over out of sorts Pat Blakely ( 16.46 ). Strong rumours around Yorkshire that only Roman Abramovic, Mohammed Al Fayad and The Sultan of Brunei have more disposable assets and wealth than Dave Calvert ( 21.49 ), the Kippax Billionaire back in action today after a recent Shoulder operation and taking on inform local star Paul Toulmin ( 21.43 ) in a tasty match up. Fine scoring from Dave as he hit 6 x 100 pluses in the opening 2 legs but contrived to lose them due to poor finishing, then it was Paul’s turn to be unbelievably charitable as he wasted 14 darts in the next 2 legs to put the game to bed and hand Dave the initiative to win the decider in 21 darts in a bizarre game to say the least. Elsewhere revenge for James Wilson as he reversed the scoreline from his last BDP appearance at Tyersal against Jaron Esteve, while Sonny Kumar was added to the growing list of Sam Hasting’s victims. ‘Big Bear’ Simon Wintle concentrating more on playing now as well as family commitments after relinquishing the setting up responsibilities after years of sterling unselfish work behind the scenes putting in long hours on match day Saturday’s for the benefit of everyone else, on Board 8 he had chances today to make life even tougher for Garry Thompson before going down 3-1 to the Silsden ace. Fortune favoured ‘happy go lucky’ Pete Riley in the next game on Board 8 as youngster Tom Blagg missed a string of doubles to take him out, most of those attempts right on the wire too.

ROUND 2

Jason Stockings 3-1 Mark Featherstone
Jonathan Hewitt 3-1 Tom Sykes
Rob Sharp 3-1 Brendan Dawson
John Clifford 3-1 Rob Richardson
Aaron Poole 3-2 Dave Calvert
Matt Padgett 3-0 Mick Hayward
Steve Jones 3-2 Tony Baines
Steve Kelly 3-0 Sharon Whitfield
Les Delderfield 3-0 Daniel Roberts
Vernon Walsh 3-1 Tony Walton
Brendan Marren 3-0 Josh Thompson
Jonathan Daniels 3-2 Craig Fisher
Bryan Harrison 3-2 Ian Brown
Josh Clough 3-2 Tony Farrow
Lewis Pride 3-0 Kath Wilson
Tony Darlow 3-0 Nigel Atkinson
Jamie Ingle 3-0 Gary Cathcart
Steve Kemp 3-1 Scott Smith
Daz Hale 3-0 Rich Winpenny
Jamie Wilson 3-0 Craig Nelmes
Steve Hattersley 3-0 Trevor Tye

Garry Thompson 3-0 Russell Murphy
Willie Kershaw 3-1 Lyndon Baxter
Brandon Walsh 3-0 Lynn Horne
Bob Pinder 3-0 Sam Hastings
Graham Lalor 3-0 Kyle Richardson
Curtis Turner 3-0 Mark Gale

Hard to take for Rich Winpenny as he threw an 80 plus average and was down to a double in all 3 legs but was beaten to the punch by Huddersfield lorry driver Daz Hale who went through the gears with a game breaking 127 finish on the Bull in leg 2 against the throw, a real body blow that had the Leeds man wincing in pain by the table, an 18 darter sealed the deal for Daz with ‘ The Boy Rabbit’ again in striking distance on 28 left. A more comfortable victory for Brendan Marren ( 27.33 ) than last time out as he played Josh Thompson ( 22.35 ) again, winning 3-0 in legs of 20, 19 and 16 darts. A superb 14 dart last leg from Jonathan Daniels got him over the line in a tight game against his Darfield SL team mate Craig Fisher. Elsewhere recent Semi Finalists Lyndon Baxter at Carlton and Tom Sykes at Tyersal both departed at this stage against top drawer players Willie Kershaw and Jonathan Hewitt.

ROUND 3

Jonathan Hewitt 3-2 Jason Stockings
Rob Sharp 3-2 John Clifford
Matt Padgett 3-1 Aaron Poole
Steve Kelly 3-0 Steve Jones
Les Delderfield 3-0 Vernon Walsh
Brendan Marren 3-0 Jonathan Daniels
Bryan Harrison 3-1 Josh Clough
Tony Darlow 3-1 Lewis Pride
Jamie Ingle 3-0 Steve Kemp
Daz Hale 3-1 James Wilson
Alex Pride 3-0 Steve Hattersley
Chris Courtman 3-1 Chez Pachela
Gary Hooper 3-0 Mark Scott
Garry Thompson 3-1 Willie Kershaw
Bob Pinder 3-2 Brandon Walsh
Graham Lalor 3-1 Curtis Turner

A brilliant performance again from Daz Hale which he would have to be to beat James Wilson, a 12 dart opener paved the way for a 3-1 win, all this after a dicey 3-2 win over Tony Wort in the opening game in which he could quite easily have lost but now looking like he was going to take some stopping on this form. Lewis Pride ( 22.91 ) another one in the crop of outstanding young players at BDP and with a Friday night tournament win at East Leeds under his belt to follow up his QF showing at Crigglestone was always going to be a tricky opponent for Tony Darlow ( 26.95 ), however Tony’s experience won the day with a 16 darter sealing a 3-1 win for him. Woodlesford’s Chris Courtman ( 20.33 ) really enjoying the BDP scene along with son Jack this year having his best result so far as he made the money stages with a 3-1 win over Keighley’s Chez Pachela ( 17.37 ) although neither player produced their best darts in that game. Yet another rematch from the previous Carlton comp for Brendan Marren and again a more comfortable looking scoreline than last time as he beat Johnathan Daniels 3-0 to progress.

ROUND 4

Jamie Ingle 3-2 Daz Hale
Alex Pride 3-1 Chris Courtman
Garry Thompson 3-0 Gary Hooper
Bob Pinder 3-2 Graham Lalor
Jonathan Hewitt 3-0 Rob Sharp
Steve Kelly 3-0 Matt Padgett
Brendan Marren 3-1 Les Delderfield
Bryan Harrison 3-2 Tony Darlow

Few would have given Jamie Ingle much of a chance against a rampant Daz Hale, however the bespectacled Bingley ace looking every inch like a high flying Accountant tore up the form book with a stunning victory, holding off a Hale fightback from 2-0 down to clinch the match with a Bull finish on 78 just as the Yorkshire County ace looked to have got on top but missed his doubles shot to give Jamie the one chance he needed to take victory. Big scoring Lancastrian Graham Lalor ( 23.78 ) looked favourite to beat Bob Pinder ( 22.45 ) with his power scoring but at the moment not clinical enough on the doubles which is costing him games as it did here with Bob taking all his chances to pull off a smash and grab raid. Bryan Harrison back in BDP action for the first time this season after suffering severe Shoulder problems which has hampered him badly, however he still managed to produce top quality darts to edge out Tony Darlow in a thrilling game in which both players averaged well over 100 according to close observers with no leg going over 15 darts. Elsewhere Steve Kelly performed superbly again to snuff out the dangerous Matt Padgett, while Garry Thompson beat good friend Gary Hooper, wins also for Johnathan Hewitt who got the better of Rob Sharp again and Alex Pride’s run of success continued with victory over Chris Courtman.

QUARTER FINALS

Alex Pride 3-2 Jamie Ingle
Garry Thompson 3-0 Bob Pinder
Steve Kelly 3-1 Jonathan Hewitt
Brendan Marren 3-0 Bryan Harrison

2 massive scores in each of the 3 legs played helped to secure a straight forward victory for Garry Thompson ( 31.31 ) over Bob Pinder ( 25.73 ), a 140, 180 in leg 1, a 135 and 140 in leg 2 and finally a 137 and 180 in leg 3 just as Bob threatened a fightback after scoring well himself in that leg to leave 40 after 15 darts but to no avail as ‘ The Recliner’ despatched the 62 needed for victory. After such a mammoth effort in the last game Bryan Harrison ( 20.49 ) had nothing left in the tank for Brendan Marren ( 28.90 ) and slipped to a 3-0 defeat but on the whole very happy with his efforts today after such a long lay off. Steve Kelly has suffered a few heavy defeats in the past to Jonathan Hewitt at BDP but managed to turn the tables this time around to win 3-1 and join Alex Pride again in opposite Semi Finals after just as they did last time out at Carlton after Alex edged out Jamie Ingle in the closest of the 4 Quarter Finals.

SEMI FINAL 1

Brendan Marren ( 25.47 ) 3-0 ( 25.85 ) Steve Kelly

A much closer game than the scoreline would suggest as Steve Kelly did himself justice in this Semi after poor displays in the Carlton Semi and Final, he matched the formidable Brendan Marren score for score all the way and should have been 2-0 up but missed 2 vital darts at doubles after seemingly doing the hard part with first dart trebles on 72 and 71 finishes, those misses proved costly as Brendan gobbled up his finishes as eagerly and quickly as a hungry Lizard devours a tank full of unfortunate cockroaches, with no mercy whatsoever as he wrapped up the match in 20, 18 and 21 darts. Not vintage Marren but enough to get the job done against a plucky opponent in Steve who is having a glorious season so far to sit 2nd in the Table after this result, ironically trailing only to the man who just beat him. 7 straight Tons and a 139 for Brendan with Steve replying with 2 x 140′s and 4 other 100 plus shots.

SEMI FINAL 2

Garry Thompson ( 28.36 ) 3-0 ( 23.46 ) Alex Pride

The second Semi never really looked in any doubt as Yorkshire and England star Garry Thompson brushed aside Alex Pride in 20, 15 and 18 darts. The Harrogate player won the advantage of throw but threw indifferently in those legs with too many costly low scores to allow Garry in to take them both comfortably. Only in the middle leg did Alex come to life with 60, 95, 140, 140 scores to leave 66 but Garry responded in kind to take the only competitive leg in 15 darts. Slightly disappointing for Alex as he said afterwards that he wanted to give Garry a sterner test but a fine achievement all the same to reach back to back Semi’s along with Steve Kelly. A total of 5 x 100 pluses and 2 x 99′s for Garry, while Alex could only manage a 100 and a 97 besides the good scores he hit in leg 2 which he will know himself isn’t going to be enough to challenge a player of Garry’s ability and class.

FINAL

Brendan Marren ( 28.36 ) 4-1 ( 26.08 ) Garry Thompson

A blistering start to the match from both these old adversaries who come from the same neck of the woods in the Keighley area, first blood to Garry as he took out 93 for a 15 dart leg just to hold off a charge from Brendan in the opener that included a 140 followed by 180 only to just miss the double target for a possible 11 or 12 darter. This time Garry pushed hard for the break with scores of 100, 77, 134 and 132 to leave 58 after 12 darts only to see Brendan respond with massive scores too to secure a 14 dart leveller. The game petered out a little after that as Garry in particular lost his way after the early fireworks and Brendan was able to plod on steadily to win the last 3 legs in 20, 22 and 20 darts whereas more often than not it usually has to be 18 darts or under to take legs off Garry, however that won’t worry Brendan too much as he collected his 2nd Title of the season. A 180, 4 x 140′s, 6 x 100 pluses and 2 x 90 odds for Brendan, while Garry hit 6 x 100 pluses and 4 x 90 odd scores but will be perplexed as to why he went off the boil in the 2nd half of the game with 11 scoring shots below 61 in those last 3 legs which you can ill afford especially against Brendan.

SUMMARY

An excellent days darts in the tent, all credit goes to everyone involved in the set up for ensuring the competition went ahead and the playing conditions were good under the circumstances. On behalf of all the players we would like to thank Simon Wintle for all the work he has put into BDP over the years and thanks to all involved in continuing the good work in the future. The BDP have announced an additional end of season Comp titled ‘The BDP Classic’ which will feature all the Last 4 placed players from each competition starting from the Townville tournament so long as a £5 entry fee is paid in by the players at the start, an excellent innovative idea from the committee to bring together all the years top performers in an extra knock out competition.

Already just under a quarter of the way through the season as BDP visited Carlton WMC right on the Leeds/Wakefield border situated between Rothwell in Leeds and Lofthouse in Wakefield. A pleasant area just off the beaten track with 2 or 3 decent local pubs besides the WMC that is prominent in the village. The playing room although quite narrow just about big enough to host the event with 8 boards all in a row with the control desk in a raised position at the far end with a clear view of all the action. No food on the premises but next door pub ‘The Unicorn’ had a reasonable menu of light lunches and snacks to choose from for our hungry players. Once again plenty of other events taking place on the same day with the PDC Pro tour in Barnsley, the BDO’s Welsh Open at Prestatyn and also a York Darts event running as well so quite a few players competing in those events rather than enjoying the Carlton scenery this afternoon resulting in a turnout of 109 players, the lowest attendance by some distance so far this season but understandable given the number of absentees.

Paul Hick 3-2 Peter Baker

A ropey opening leg between Gary Hooper (22.32) and Rob Holroyd (24.58) eventually won by the Halifax man in 28 darts after Gary had missed a hatful of doubles to take an early lead, nothing ropey about the rest of the game though as both players settled down to produce a high scoring encounter just shaded by ‘The Hoops’ in the end by 3 legs to 2. After making a big impression on his BDP debut last time out Carl Fisher (25.97) got off to a good start with 2 x 15 dart legs and a 3-1 victory and over Jamie Ogley (19.48), the youngster from South Elmsall tailing off in the final leg as his head dropped a little after taking the opening leg of the game. An early exit this week for Crigglestone Semi Finalist Bob Birkenshaw (23.76) losing out 3-1 in a tough opening draw to Jonathan Daniels (26.16), the Darfield player clinical to take all of his chances on finishes of 90, 56 and 52 after losing the opening leg. A tremendous effort from Rotherham youngster Josh Thompson taking Crigglestone Winner Brendan Marren the distance in a high quality game. Pudsey Window Fitter Ian Ward finished off Rich Winpenny 3-1 with a 101 finish just as the Woodlesford player hoped to level up on Tops but instead he was resigned to another long afternoon of watching games and collating stats. A good round for Pudsey as Ian’s team mates John Clifford and Mark Gale from ‘The Kings Arms’ team also progressed through to Round 2 after victories over Lynn Horne and Josh Scales.

ROUND 2

Jamie Ingle 3-2 Brendan Dawson
Les Delderfield 3-0 Russell Murphy
Paddy Cunnane 3-1 Tracey Gledhill
Carl Wilkinson 3-0 Ian Ward
Gary Hooper 3-2 Laura Tye
Ian Brown 3-2 Jason Stockings
Sam Hastings 3-1 Steve Hattersley
Pete Riley 3-1 Mick Hayward
Bob Pinder 3-0 Colin Lawrence
Vernon Walsh 3-0 Joe Harrison
Daniel Roberts 3-0 Louise Simmonds
Pete Rebanks 3-1 Ryan Hoggarth
Nigel Atkinson 3-2 Tony Farrow
Mick Wiltshire 3-1 Chris Courtman
Alex Pride 3-0 Chris Burnell
Dave Shore 3-1 Craig Fisher
Tom Sykes 3-0 Mark Calvert
Steve Kemp 3-0 Dave Murray
Sam Fordham 3-0 Steve Cadera
Chris Namnieks 3-2 Simon Wintle
Katie Hoggarth 3-0 Regan Pettinger
John Clifford 3-1 Mark Gale
Steve Kelly 3-2 Trevor Tye
Kelvin Pease 3-2 Dave Wilson
Graham Lalor 3-2 Jonathan Hewitt
Willie Kershaw 3-2 Gary O'Donnell
Mel Daley 3-0 Paul Priestland
Mark Hanslip 3-0 Andy Cheesebrough
Mark Robinson 3-2 Pete Middleton
Brendan Marren 3-2 Jonathan Daniels
Lyndon Baxter 3-1 Daz Layden
Paul Toulmin 3-1 Paul Hick

Not the same level of performance from Ian Ward (21.28) in Round 2 as he was soundly beaten 3-0 by Yorkshire County ace Carl Wilkinson (25.91), yet another player off the Darfield production line, heavy scoring from Carl who could even afford 7 missed darts at double in the last leg. No joy though for Carl’s Darfield mates as Craig Fisher went down to impressive Dave Shore who finished the game with a big shout of encouragement after taking out 114 on the Bull for a 3-1 win whilst Jonny Daniels put up a brave fight before going down 3-2 to Brendan Marren who was having to work tremendously hard already to progress. Huddersfield Student Daniel Roberts (21.78) a dead ringer for actor Daniel Ratcliffe better known as ‘Harry Potter’ and originally from Dagenham has made steady progress in his first BDP season and sits comfortably in the Top 16 after a string of decent showings to collect mainly 8 and 9 pointers so far, the County Youth player steady again especially on finishes of 59, 71 and 64 to see off an out of sorts Louise Simmonds (15.92) 3-0. Laura Tye led Gary Hooper 2-0 as a shock looked on the cards only for the Lancashire County ace to show all his battling qualities and fight back for a 3-2 win. Bingley’s Jamie Ingle looking back to top form with 104 and 106 finishes to edge out Sowerby Bridge ace Brendan Dawson. Probably young Sam Hasting’s biggest win at BDP so far as he ousted highly rated Huddersfield player Steve Hattersley 3-1, as one observer commented ‘looks like a boy, throws like a man’, a very apt description if ever there was one. At the other end of the scale vastly experienced Pete Rebanks (22.58) overcame youth in the form of Ryan Hoggarth (19.41), sealing the match with the best leg of the game in 18 darts.

ROUND 3

Jamie Ingle 3-2 Les Delderfield
Carl Wilkinson 3-1 Paddy Cunnane
Gary Hooper 3-1 Ian Brown
Sam Hastings 3-0 Pete Riley
Bob Pinder 3-2 Vernon Walsh
Daniel Roberts 3-0 Pete Rebanks
Mick Wiltshire 3-1 Nigel Atkinson
Alex Pride 3-2 Dave Shore
Steve Kemp 3-1 Tom Sykes
Sam Fordham 3-1 Chris Namnieks
John Clifford 3-0 Katie Hoggarth
Steve Kelly 3-2 Kelvin Pease
Willie Kershaw 3-2 Graham Lalor
Mark Hanslip 3-1 Mel Daley
Brendan Marren 3-0 Mark Robinson
Lyndon Baxter 3-2 Paul Toulmin

Another established player in Pete Riley put to the sword by Sam Hastings as he made the Last 16, a massive achievement for an 11 year old barely 5ft tall with a waif like build, amazing how he manages to get the power into his shots with such precision and accuracy. Tom Sykes (22.27) missed 9 darts at Doubles to go 2-0 up on Steve Kemp (23.90) and paid the price as the experienced Crossgates player hit back to win 3-1 with a superb 14 dart clincher against the throw. Burnley star Graham Lalor (26.95) hit 10 x 100 pluses against Willie Kershaw (26.60) but just came up short in the end after battling back from 2-0 down with 16 and 18 darters only to see Willie stick in a 17 darter to deny him in the deciding leg. Bingley’s Jamie Ingle with probably his biggest scalp so far at BDP after knocking out a major player in Les Delderfield 3-2.

ROUND 4

Carl Wilkinson 3-0 Jamie Ingle
Gary Hooper 3-0 Sam Hastings
Bob Pinder 3-2 Daniel Roberts
Alex Pride 3-2 Mick Wiltshire
Sam Fordham 3-1 Steve Kemp
Steve Kelly 3-1 John Clifford
Mark Hanslip 3-1 Willie Kershaw
Lyndon Baxter 3-1 Brendan Marren

The competition absolutely wide open after a Round which saw the demise of hot favourites Willie Kershaw and Brendan Marren. Mark Hanslip shocking fellow Shipley Woodbottom SL team mate Willie Kershaw with a stunning 3-1 win as he made the QF’s for the first time, meanwhile Sowerby Bridge player Lyndon Baxter rolled back the years with a vintage display capped off with a 118 finish to take out Brendan Marren who has been in majestic form even by his standards with victory at Crigglestone 2 weeks ago followed up by victory over PDC star Chris Thompson in the Final of the star studded ‘Armaggedon’ Comp at East Leeds last Saturday. Another potential giant killing was avoided as Gary Hooper (23.48) did just enough to keep Sam Hastings (20.22) at bay with 22, 19 and 23 dart winning legs in a game where all the pressure was on him. Not one off Rotherham youngster Sam Fordham’s (21.08) better performances compared to some of his games over the last couple of Comps in particular but good enough to get the better of Steve Kemp (21.07) who hit a 108 finish in that game to take his leg but slipped to a 3-1 defeat. Victories also for Steve Kelly, Alex Pride, Bob Pinder and Carl Wilkinson.

QUARTER FINALS

Carl Wilkinson 3-1 Gary Hooper
Alex Pride 3-0 Bob Pinder
Steve Kelly 3-0 Sam Fordham
Lyndon Baxter 3-2 Mark Hanslip

Probably have to search back quite a way through the records to find out the last time neither Delderfield, Kershaw or Marren all attended but failed to reach the Last 8 of a BDP event such is their dominance but with those players now out of the way anyone of the Quarter Finalists would feel at this stage that they had an excellent chance to win it. Sheffield’s Bob Pinder the slight favourite at this stage with his record at BDP events crashed out 3-0 to a resurgent Alex Pride who has shown in the past he is well capable of winning tournaments on his day. A roses county battle as Yorkshire player Carl Wilkinson (27.77) beat Lancashire star Gary Hooper (24.89) in an entertaining game with Gary not able to take out 36 with 3 darts to force the game into a decider while evergreen Steve Kelly always there or thereabouts ended Sam Fordham’s fine run with a 3-0 victory. All eyes were on the final game to finish in a tense but enthralling affair on Board 2, things looked to be going Mark Hanslip’s way as he set up a finish for the match only to see Lyndon Baxter take out a do or die 75 with the last dart hitting Tops as the crowd fell silent and then cheered wildly as the game went into a decider which Lyndon shaded and left Mark to contemplate what might have been had he had that shot to wrap up a 3-1 win, all the same a great days work from one of BDP’s unsung heroes who puts so much effort in along with the rest of the crew into setting up the boards beforehand.

SEMI FINAL 1

Carl Wilkinson (25.55) 3-2 (24.12) Alex Pride

Barnsley star Carl Wilkinson came from 2-1 down against Alex Pride to reach his first BDP Final. A tentative start from both players as they realised what was at stake with Alex managing to hold throw in 27 darts after both players had missed doubles, from then on the game got better as the next 3 legs all went with the throw, firstly Carl levelling up in 20 darts, then a 19 darter from Alex followed by an 18 darter from Carl to square the game at 2-2. The pattern of the game suggested Alex was the hot favourite with advantage of throw and he played a solid leg to leave 82 after 15 darts, forcing Carl into producing something special to beat him, the Yorkshire County B player did just that with 6 magic darts, a 177 followed up with an 87 finish on the Bull, superb darts when he most needed them right at the death to deny the Harrogate star a shot at a third BDP title victory. A very even game with Carl hitting the killer 177, 7 x 100 pluses and 5 other 90 odd scores with Alex replying with 9 x 100 pluses, a 99 and 98 score.

SEMI FINAL 2

Steve Kelly (22.89) 3-2 (20.68) Lyndon Baxter

A very tense second Semi Final as neither player could reproduce their earlier form in a nitty gritty battle that followed the same pattern as the first Semi as Halifax veteran Steve Kelly had to break throw in the decider to win it. An up and down game as both scored well at times but were let down by too many inconsistent scores for their liking, the man from Sowerby Bridge nicknamed ‘Linebacker’ led 2-1 with winning legs in 25 and 23 darts, cries from mates in the crowd too of ‘Come on Alien’ another nickname for Lyndon although no one was prepared to divulge where that one came from so we can draw our own conclusions there. It looked like ‘Alien’ was about to land as he had 5 darts for the match in leg 4 but missed them all to allow Steve a reprieve. The chance had gone for Lyndon and it probably played on his mind in the last leg as poor scores of 26, 15 and 41 meant ‘The Halifax Bomber’ was first to the double, making no mistake to sink the first dart in Tops for the match. A fortunate win for Steve and he knew it and also knew he would have to find his A game again in the Final to compete with the high scoring of Carl Wilkinson. 11 x 100′s in that game for Steve which is a decent statistic but also 10 scoring shots of 45 or under which won’t please him. Only 7 x 100 pluses in 5 legs for Lyndon with 3 of those coming in leg 3 although his scoring in general wasn’t as erratic with a number of 60 pluses in the game but nothing like the brilliance he showed earlier to overcome Brendan Marren.

FINAL

Carl Wilkinson (24.41) 4-1 (20.94) Steve Kelly

A comfortable first BDP title for Carl Wilkinson as he overcame a disappointing Steve Kelly in the Final, maybe too long a day for Steve as he couldn’t manage to up his performance level from the Semi which was never going to be enough to match Carl who had scored heavily all day and played well in all of his games. In fact the Final was probably his poorest display but in truth he was never really under too much pressure from Steve despite conceding leg 3 in which he poor himself to allow the silver haired left hander a glimmer of hope with a 24 dart break. Hopes of a fightback were short lived though as the big Barnsley player put that lapse behind him to power home with 16 and 18 dart legs for a win that his form over the course of the day merited. Only 7 x 100 pluses from Carl but well backed up with 7 other scoring shots over 80, while once again Steve hit his fair share of big scores with 8 x 100 pluses and 2 x 90 odds but the low scores in between cost him dearly, the final leg in particular dragging his average down as he probably sensed that defeat was inevitable by then.

SUMMARY

Another new name on a BDP title as Carl Wilkinson showed his class and the form that has earned him a Yorkshire County place, while Steve Kelly another player who deserves to win one at some point after coming close in Finals and Semi’s a few times over the years. Once again today proved that so many players at BDP are capable of winning a tournament with a total of 19 different players over 6 events so far this year contesting the Semi Finals which shows the level of competition in these tournaments. So tight looking at the tables that a no show at this stage could plunge players at least 10 places down the leader board in the race for the Top 48 come the end of the season.

Once again a few regular players missing due to the Isle of Man Open held over the same weekend, still a very healthy turnout of 136 players for the 5th event of the season at Crigglestone WMC just off Junction 39 of the M1 in South Wakefield. No Terry Temple for the first time this season as he was participating in a PDC event down South but a debut appearance from former PDC tour player Matt Padgett from Ilkeston in Derbyshire who has also appeared on TV at the PDC World Championships and UK Open in the not too distant past. Lessons learnt from last season here regarding the set up of the Boards with 2 rows of 4 lined up at 90 degrees to each other so no problems with interference this time around. A local cafe and chip shop provided the energy supplies needed to see the players through a hard afternoons work.

ROUND 1 (Prelims)

Steve Wadsworth 3-2 Brandon Lawson
Mark Wainwright 3-2 Chris Winters
John Utting 3-0 Scott Smith
Mark Fordham 3-1 Chris Thwaites
Chris Longstaff 3-0 Jamie Royston
Colin Hendry 3-2 Sam Sergeant
Rob Richardson 3-0 Russ Popplewell

Luck of the draw determines who plays in the Round 1 in effect Prelim games, as it was there were no surprises as all the known established players came through. Chris Longstaff overcoming Jamie Royston the only tie of an unknown quantity.

ROUND 2

Paul Priestland 3-2 Michelle Binns
Kelvin Pease 3-2 Derek Cox

Castleford’s Kelvin Pease (20.08) featured in the first batch of games in Round 2 and made heavy weather of it edging out Derek Cox (19.00) from Lupset, Wakefield in a tense struggle over 5 legs. Nothing tense about Dave Shore (28.90) as the man from Crossflats beat inform Tony Wort (23.31) for the 2nd comp running, this time without dropping a leg as he fired in impressive 17, 20 and 15 dart legs and finishing the match with a neat 117 finish, no doubt Tony will hoping to avoid him next time out. A stella showing on his debut at BDP from Craig Fisher (29.18) firing in 12 x 100 pluses including a 180 to win legs in 14, 20 and 13 darts for a 3-1 win and take Rich Winpenny (22.23) completely by surprise although no surprise to his Darfield SL team mates who have watched him notch up 6 wins out of 6 in the Premier Division this season with performances just like that one. Duff information in last week’s report describing Mark Gale (23.86) as a Sunderland fan living in York, wrong profile though as this Mark Gale is a staunch Arsenal fan residing in Pudsey in West Leeds, originally from Aldershot the Project Manager is a former Surrey County player and is making a big impression so far this season high up in the Rankings table, more points now after a 3-0 win over Harrogate’s Mark Threlfall (22.70). Jonathan Hewitt (26.81) looked to be steamrollering Rob Sharp (20.81) taking the opening 2 legs both in 17 darts with Rob in no man’s land, despite being out scored for the most part the Beeston thrower so nearly took the game into a decider with a dart on the wire of D15 on an audacious attempt at 94, not to be though as Jonathan slotted in D18 in 19 darts for victory and breathed a sigh of relief. No major surprises elsewhere although Matt Padgett had to come from 2-0 down to edge past Mick Hayward. Only Yorks County player Sharon Whitfield progressing from the ladies with a fine 3-1 victory over the vastly experienced Vernon Walsh which could be seen as a shock result but not really given Sharon’s quality and pedigree.

A tremendous battle on Board 3 as Bob Birkenshaw (26.19) from Stanley, Wakefield had to pull out all the stops to see off Hull youngster Jake Patchett (25.30) who had a dart for the match at 2-2, a nerveless D10 finished the job for Bob followed by a large gulp of John Smith’s Smooth after that epic. After last week’s Semi Final spot Tom Sykes bowed out early this week but not before taking out a 150 finish and pushing Jonathan Hewitt all the way in another 3-2 thriller. Bradford’s Kevin Gray (20.62) showing signs that he is on the way back to form after a 3-1 over Halifax’s Lyndon Baxter (20.52) in a high scoring game let down by a stack of missed doubles which sent the averages tumbling. A killer shot in each leg from Mark Gale (23.12) made all the difference in his match with Simon Rimington (20.77), firstly a 134 set up to leave tops, then a 72 Checkout on the Bull and finally a 122 to leave tops again just as the former Lancaster University student looked to be in with at least an equal chance in all 3 legs. A very workmanlike and professional performance from Johnathan Daniels (25.91) as he hit 4 x 140′s along with plenty of other big scores to eventually wear down young Joe Harrison (17.78) who fell away in the final leg as the pressure finally told in the end. A great draw for the rest of the field as one of the favourites had to fall in the Marren v Delderfield clash, always a 50/50 between these two with Brendan coming out on top 3-2 on this occasion.

ROUND 4

Kelvin Pease 3-2 Steve Jones

80′s pop band King once had a big hit with a song called ‘ Love and Pride ‘, maybe they should re release it but change the title to ‘ Lewis Pride ‘ after the Harrogate youngsters superb victory over Tyersal Comp Winner Dave Wilson, with the opening line of that song altered to ‘That’s what my dart yearns for now some Lewis Pride’. No joy for Alex Pride as former Yorkshire County ace Mark Beaumont scuppered a Last 16 shoot out between father and son, a very rare appearance from the Ryhill man who once held the record for the highest County average of just under 40 per dart a few years ago. Bob Pinder (23.12) came through fairly comfortably 3-0 against Mark Slowacki (20.65) but was far from happy with his form afterwards although he still had enough class to put in the big set up shots of 140, 120 and 140 all to leave finishes just when he needed to. Another big finish from a player that didn’t win the match as Kevin Gray hit a 141 but lost out 3-2 to Steve Kelly.

ROUND 5 – (LAST 16)

Kelvin Pease 3-0 Bob Pinder
Matt Padgett 3-1 Sam Fordham
Bob Birkenshaw 3-0 Steve Kelly
Lewis Pride 3-2 Mark Beaumont
Andy Cheesebrough3-0 Jonathan Daniels
Brendan Marren 3-0 Daz Twist
Willie Kershaw 3-2 Jonathan Hewitt
Paul Toulmin 3-0 Craig Fisher

The term a game of two halves is often used to describe football matches but would sum up the Willie Kershaw (25.54) and Johnathan Hewitt (26.44) game perfectly. Raised eyebrows and puzzled looks everywhere from onlookers as in the first 2 legs Willie failed to hit a 3 figure score in 12 visits to the Board and had an average of just 17.83 as Johnathan waltzed through legs 1 and 2 in 18 and 19 darts and looked for all the world like marmalising the out of touch Shipley player, then almost like flicking a light switch on at the start of leg 3 the 2010 Grand Final Winner suddenly raced through the gears to turn the game on its head with breathless legs in 16, 18 and 14 darts recording a 31.31 average for those winning legs to leave everyone including Johnathan stunned at the sudden turnaround, the Wortley star did little wrong but just wasn’t given a look in after he went 2-0 up. Daz Twist very much plays with his heart on his sleeve, rarely shy when it comes to self praise after a good performance but equally damning after a poor showing. Words such as ‘Disgusting, Disgraceful and Rubbish’ all used together with a few other unprintable ones by ‘Dazzling Daz’ to describe his effort after a 3-0 defeat to Brendan Marren. A definite contender for performance of the day though from Paul Toulmin (30.06), yet another quality player from Shipley as he blitzed Craig Fisher (24.82) in 17, 21 and a brilliant 12 darter with a 121 finish on the Bull to cap it all off. Quiet Man Craig, a Window Fabricator from Darfield, Barnsley had a taste of his own medicine after he had earlier dished out drubbings to Rich Winpenny, Mick Wiltshire and Mark Featherstone for the loss of only a single leg. Sam Fordham another young player improving all the time had his best BDP Comp to date after fine wins over Paul Hick, Rob Richardson and Russell Murphy before dipping out 3-1 to Matt Padgett who was beginning to look very dangerous now after coming through really tough battles against Mick Hayward, Jamie Ogley and Daniel Roberts.

QUARTER FINALS

Matt Padgett 3-1 Kelvin Pease
Bob Birkenshaw 3-0 Lewis Pride
Brendan Marren 3-1 Andy Cheesebrough
Paul Toulmin 3-2 Willie Kershaw

The politest man in darts Brendan Marren (26.35) held off a spirited challenge from Andy Cheesebrough (25.61), the ‘Big Cheese’ hammering in a 13 darter but couldn’t stop Brendan taking the other 3 legs to march into the Semi’s. A hard Friday night practice session in Lofthouse Club was paying dividends for Bob Birkenshaw as he made the Semi’s for the second time after a comfortable victory over Lewis Pride, just a game too far for the youngster after some superb earlier displays to record his best ever BDP outing so far. Matt Padgett (26.19) played some solid darts to see off Kelvin Pease (23.37) although the Castleford star could have conceivably won 3-0 had he been able to finish in the opening 2 legs and will probably look back and think he missed a big opportunity to go all the way here maybe. An all Shipley battle at the bottom of the draw as Woodbottom SL team mates Paul Toulmin and Willie Kershaw slugged it out to a decider on Board 7 with Paul coming through after it looked like he had missed his chance after missing darts for the match only for Willie to miss too and hand him a second chance which he was never going to pass up again.

SEMI FINAL 1

Brendan Marren (31.31) 3-0 (24.72) Paul Toulmin

If anyone today could stop Brendan Marren then Paul Toulmin had to be the best bet. The Shipley Welder was in majestic form all day to see off a string of quality opponents in Ian Ward, Daz Layden, Andy Smith, Craig Fisher and Willie Kershaw to reach his first BDP Semi Final, however with his first 3 darts scoring a Maximum Brendan made his intentions clear right from the off and never looked back as he squeezed the life out of Paul like a Boa Constrictor wrapping itself around a helpless deer. Nothing that Paul could do to stem the tide of heavy shots coming at him every time Brendan visited the board. Amazingly Brendan had a dart in all 3 legs to go out in 12 darts, narrowly missing with the last dart on 126, 156 and 121 attempts before going on to close the legs in 14, 19, and 15 darts in the end, brief hope for Paul in leg 2 with 2 darts at Tops as Brendan missed with 6 double attempts to give him an unexpected lifeline, however he was probably too shell-shocked to take the chance and unlikely to get another as the Keighley Gentleman powered through the last leg with 140,140,100 and 96 scores with the ‘Top Banana’ well and truly peeled back on 185 as Brendan finished the remaining 25 with 3 more darts for a whirlwind victory. 2 x 180′s, 2 x 140′s, 4 x 100 pluses with a lowest scoring shot of 80 throughout the match, scoring power that even the very best pro players would have trouble living with. Although Paul was well beaten in this match he had shown everyone who didn’t already know what a fine player he is with his earlier performances. 2 x 140′s, 1 x 100 and a 96 in this match with a lot of steady 60′s which would have given half a chance against most players but sadly no chance against Brendan.

SEMI FINAL 2

Matt Padgett (26.78) 3-1 (24.04) Bob Birkenshaw

BDP debutant Matt Padgett from Ilkeston in Derbyshire, known for having a County Cricket Ground and a half decent Co-op that offers cheap holidays from time to time powered past Jovial Joiner Bob Birkenshaw to make the Final and possibly join a selected band of first time winners. A blistering start from him as he opened up with a 136 finish for a 12 dart leg to immediately break Bob’s throw, a solid 18 darter put him 2-0 up and in the box seat, to his credit Bob fought back to take leg 3 in 21 darts and had a great chance to level the game after good set up play earned him 3 clear darts at Tops, the audible groan from Bob after the last dart missed the target signalled the end for him as he knew there was unlikely to be a second chance as Matt went on to nail the D10 needed for victory. A 180, 2 x 140′s and 3 x 100′s made up most of Matt’s scoring while Bob replied with 5 x 100 pluses and a couple of 90 odd scores but the Wakefield star a little disappointed that he didn’t quite reproduce his form from previous rounds in this game.

FINAL

Brendan Marren (28.06) 4-1 (28.11) Matt Padgett

A golden 3 legs swung the game in Brendan Marren’s favour after losing the opening leg to Matt Padgett who only found out about the BDP event at 1am the previous evening while playing in the Semi’s of another competition in Birmingham, no prize money for him for that achievement but the £100 Runners Up prize here made up for it somewhat. He looked on course for the top prize after a 17 dart opener to break the throw only for ‘The Afterburner’ to fire on all cylinders with a quickfire 45 dart salvo which brought him 3 legs all in 15 darts and in the blink of an eye the Derbyshire man trailed 3-1 despite averaging over 31 per dart at that stage having done precious little wrong, so hard to match a player who hits 10 out of 12 scoring shots over 100 and bangs in a 121 finish for good measure in that spell. 3 more consecutive Tons followed in leg 5 for Brendan but for once he gave Matt a rare glimmer of hope by missing 6 darts at doubles, however the Bowling Alley Mechanic couldn’t strike the double either and Brendan wrapped up victory in a less impressive 26 darts for a slightly tame finish after what had gone on beforehand. Power scoring at its best from Brendan as he rattled in 4 x 140′s, 11 x 100′s and a 136. Excellent from Matt too as he showed the Yorkshire public how good he is just like he did a couple of years earlier at the UK Open Qualifier at Batley when demolishing the seemingly unbeatable Scott Waites 5-1 in a Semi Final game. 3 x 140′s, 1 x 135 with a string of 9 x 90 odd scores too but not quite enough on this occasion but maybe so on another day as we look forward to seeing him again at BDP comps.

SUMMARY

Nice to see another top player from outside the local area competing with our regular players. Fresh competition is always good for the game and creates even more interest. The darts scene is thriving in Yorkshire with regular competitions held besides BDP events all with decent prize money which is attracting players from further afield who as Matt Padgett said himself don’t have this kind of thing going on in their local area. Unfortunate that time was pressing on towards the latter stages, not running unduly late but the club were anticipating a finish time of around 6.30 which meant the first Semi had to be played while the other QF’s were still in progress so didn’t have the stand alone exposure that it deserved while the second Semi was played while equipment all around was being dismantled and glasses behind the bar rattled loudly at times, credit to the players who got on with the job though without complaint to give the spectators good entertainment.

A reasonable turnout of 126 for the 4th BDP event of the season at Tyersal RC one of the more established venues in the calendar. Very rarely these days do we have a non clashing date such is the popularity of darts. The British Internationals in Fleetwood, the Tyne and Wear Open and a York Darts event all happening today meant a few players that probably would have attended BDP were otherwise engaged. Terry Temple was here though and aiming for amazing 4 Titles in a row sequence although there were plenty of quality players in the field out to stop him including red hot James Wilson attending his first BDP of the season.

James Wilson’s (26.82) form has been so good especially over the last year that he has been selected to play for England, just reward for a string of outstanding displays in Super League, County and Competition darts. However even he may have been a little apprehensive about his opening draw as opponent Jaron Esteve (26.37) has also been in the form of his life winning several local Comps and trousering over £800 in prize money since Christmas. The match lived up to the anticipation as Jaron brilliantly took out 160 to hold throw in 15 darts with Jamie poised on 81, that shot must have rocked James to the core and he never really recovered as the Wakefield star took the next 2 legs in 21 darts each for a stunning 3-0 victory. Another major player Grand Final Champ Tony Darlow (27.04) also fell early although no surprise losing out 3-1 to Brendan Marren (27.32) in a crunch draw for both players. A much more comfortable passage through for Terry Temple (23.12) as he cruised past Dave Murrey (15.60), similar story for Jonathan Hewitt (27.33) back from a bad knee injury as he beat Sonny Kumar (18.39), the Bradford player concentrating more on his swing bowling in the local Cricket League rather than darts these days. A steady performance also from Daz Hale (25.05) fresh from a good showing at The Scottish Open a week earlier as he took out Lancashire Youth player Nathan Aspinall (20.42) in straight legs. A fruitless journey back to Stockport for the Aspinall’s as dad Paul also fell in the opening Round to Adam Tooley. A first time at BDP for Bradford player Brian Cairns, originally from Renfrewshire in Scotland playing darts alongside the likes of Jamie Harvey and Paul Hanvidge amongst others, however Michelle Binns made it a miserable debut for him with a fine 3-1 victory. Mark Featherstone (20.14) made hard work of it against Mick Hayward (19.01) missing 12 darts to wrap up a 3-1 win but managing to scrape through in the decider. Some big finishes as Daz Layden hit a 142 to help him beat Steve Kelly 3-2 for the 2nd comp running, while Steve Kemp crashed in a 146 but lost out 3-2 to Alex Pride. Rich Winpenny closed out his match with Steve Cadera with a 129 on the bull, while Tony Wort couldn’t repeat his Last 64 Scottish Open heroics where he hit a spectacular 2 Double Tops finish to see off top Cumbrian player Steve Bonnett and win his Board, however no similar feat today as Dave Shore beat him 3-1.

After surviving a major scare against Aaron Poole in the opening round to win 3-2 fortunes went the other way for Les Delderfield in Round 2 as he lost out 3-2 to Adam Ward, formerly from Bridgwater in Somerset but now residing in Lincoln where he plays darts for the County he is one of a number of Lincolnshire players making frequent visits to BDP competitions and enhancing his reputation even more after this result. No joy though for travel partner Ricky Hunter as he went down 3-1 to Mark Featherstone. A whirlwind opening leg of 14 darts for Dave Broxup (21.78) with opponent Josh Clough (20.64) none too shabby either waiting on 57 after 15 darts, however the rest of the game not so good with both players missing plenty of doubles with Lofthouse Pigeon Racer Dave coming home to roost in the end with a 3-0 win. Youngster Tom Sykes caused a stir on Board 4 as he beat Daz Twist 3-2, the Yorkshire Youth star should have wrapped the game up earlier in all truth and so nearly paid the price as Daz missed a shot for an unlikely win. Brendan Marren in the wars with cuts, bruises and grazes after a nasty fall from his bike but not taking his foot off the pedal on the dart board as he came through another tough test 3-1 against Jonathan Hewitt. Semi Finalist at East Leeds last time out Daz Layden another big casualty in this round as big Tony Farrow from Barnsley inflicted a 3-0 whitewash on him.

ROUND 3

Mark Featherstone 3-2 Tony Farrow
Dave Broxup 3-2 Nigel Atkinson
Gary Hooper 3-1 Bob Birkenshaw
Dave Wilson 3-0 Alex Pride
Anil Barot 3-1 Paul Hick
Rich Winpenny 3-1 Willie Kershaw
Lyndon Baxter 3-0 Darren Goy
Tom Sykes 3-2 Paul Toulmin
Curtis Turner 3-2 Adam Ward
Joe Harrison 3-0 Mark Robinson
Jaron Esteve 3-0 Veejay Kumar
Terry Temple 3-0 Antony Moss
Mark Gale 3-1 Ian Holmes
Paul Hodkin 3-1 Steve Hattersley
Daz Hale 3-1 Brendan Marren
Bob Pinder 3-0 Rob Sharp

A high scoring battle on Board 3 went the way of Gary Hooper (27.44) as he held off a strong challenge from Bob Birkenshaw (26.95) to win 3-1, a 177 from ‘The Hoops’ helped set up a 15 darter with 18 and 20 darters to follow after Bob had took the opener in 17 darts. Jaron Esteve (28.36) kept up his fine form, the man likened to 70′s American Detective ‘Columbo’ with a similar build and matching hair style, just like the great man used to do back in the day to outwit suspects he asked all the searching questions against Veejay Kumar (22.19) who had few answers as the only thing Jaz didn’t do like ‘Columbo’ was apply the hand cuffs to Veejay after a 3-0 victory. Serial winners Brendan Marren and Willie Kershaw with many titles between them over the years both crashed out at this stage, in form Daz Hale accounting for Brendan 3-1, while Rich Winpenny fortunate to edge past Adam Tooley in the last round stepped up his game and took out every mid range finish he had to topple Willie Kershaw 3-1. Fine day so far for the younger players as teenagers Curtis Turner, Joe Harrison, Tom Sykes and Anil Barot all progressed to the Last 16. Curtis in particular has been a revelation this season, high in the order of merit charts and well into the points again after taking out the very dangerous Adam Ward, off the oche his stunning girlfriend was even more of a revelation dressed in tight purple leggings which certainly raised the temperature in the room by a few degrees. Elsewhere Mark Gale ended Bradford player Ian Holmes best ever run in a BDP comp while Darts Entrepreneur Paul Hodkin showed he can play nearly as well as he can organise exhibitions after a fine win over inform Steve Hattersley.

ROUND 4

Dave Broxup 3-2 Mark Featherstone
Dave Wilson 3-1 Gary Hooper
Rich Winpenny 3-0 Anil Barot
Tom Sykes 3-0 Lyndon Baxter
Curtis Turner 3-1 Joe Harrison
Terry Temple 3-0 Jaron Esteve
Mark Gale 3-0 Paul Hodkin
Bob Pinder 3-1 Daz Hale

While quite a few of the top players were falling in the early rounds it seems Terry Temple (29.47) must be immune to defeats at BDP, a 100% record so far and closing in on Title No 4 after another display of power darts to see off form player Jaz Esteve (25.48). After taking out a 94 finish in 15 darts to go 2-0 up the 50 year old Pro player from Whitwell on the Hill, York, then took out 146 for the match just as Jaz looked set for a fightback after leaving tops, clinical darts once again from Terry to snuff out the danger. After 3 fine wins over Andrew Smurfitt, Daniel Roberts and Paul Hick, young newcomer Anil Barot (16.54) couldn’t reproduce that earlier form allowing Rich Winpenny (21.78) a comfortable passage into the Quarter Finals. Back on track today after early defeats in the last 2 Comps Bob Pinder making excellent progress at the bottom of the draw and coming through his toughest test so far after a 3-1 win over Daz Hale. Curtis Turner won the battle of the ‘Young Guns’ defeating Joe Harrison 3-1, although dad Bryan Harrison still absent due to a serious shoulder injury would of been proud of his son’s efforts today in reaching the Last 16. Sunderland fan Mark Gale an ever present so far and keeping pace with the front runners with 10 points at least in the bag after ending Paul Hodkin’s run. Dave Broxup throwing well locally around Leeds finally producing the goods at BDP with a best ever showing to reach the Last 8 after a tight 3-2 squeeze over Mark Featherstone. Dave Wilson back in the picture too after a fine 3-1 win over Gary Hooper, while teen sensation Tom Sykes showing no nerves whatsoever accounting for Lynden Baxter who is showing real signs of returning to his old form of a few years ago despite going down 3-0 in that game.

QUARTER FINALS

Dave Wilson 3-0 Dave Broxup
Tom Sykes 3-1 Rich Winpenny
Terry Temple 3-0 Curtis Turner
Bob Pinder 3-0 Mark Gale

Quite a few fresh faces in the Quarter Finals with a real chance of making a name for themselves today although Terry Temple the overwhelming favourite at this stage with the experienced Bob Pinder well used to appearing at this stage of a BDP comp likely on paper to be his main challenger from here on in. A brave effort from 17 year old Curtis Turner (24.46) hitting some fine scores but still couldn’t get close enough to stop Terry Temple (28.90) notching up another clinical victory in 21, 15 and 16 darts. Dave Broxup couldn’t find his rhythm against the slower pace of Dave Wilson and went down 3-0, while Bob Pinder beat Mark Gale by the same score. Castleford has produced many fine players over the years, the likes of Steve O’ Donnell, Tony Burrows and Brian Bird spring to mind, maybe another great player in the making as Tom Sykes reaches the Semi’s in only his 3rd appearance in a BDP event after a 3-1 win over Rich Winpenny, the East Leeds Semi Finalist kicking himself after missing 3 darts at tops to go into a decider.

SEMI FINAL 1

Dave Wilson (26.05) 3-2 (23.15) Tom Sykes

A match that went right to the wire in the end with Dave Wilson just about deserving the victory after earlier missing 3 darts at D5 to wrap up a 3-1 win. He was made to sweat in the decider though as Tom Sykes attempted a 113 shot for the match, his opening dart landing sweetly in the T20, a Single 13 would have given him a shot at Tops but there was a massive groan from the crowd as the 2nd dart slipped agonisingly into Double 13 and the chance was gone. Dave Wilson has always looked cool and composed under pressure and he made no mistake to slot in the Double 16 with his 1st dart for a place in the Final. The Huddersfield Roofer hit scores of 100, 180 and 121 in the opening leg but contrived to lose it after missing 5 darts at Doubles to let Tom in for a 20 dart hold, more brilliant scoring from Dave as he looked back to his best here with 140, 100, 134, 87 and 40 for a superb 13 dart leg to level up. The momentum was all with the 42 year old from Millsbridge at this stage as he took an indifferent leg in 24 darts to break the throw and then looked to be closing in on victory in leg 4, however ‘The Ginga Ninja’ from Airedale hit a fine 116 to leave 36 and pressure Dave’s finish, the pressure paid off as Tom was handed a lifeline which he took with the minimum of fuss and suddenly after being on the back foot for most of the game he was throwing for the match which resulted in that dramatic finish and a sigh of relief for ‘Ravey Davey’ at the end. Dave had the edge on the scoring with 10 x 100 pluses and winning legs in 13, 24 and 19 darts, while Tom hit 7 x 100 pluses and his legs came in 20 and 19 darts.

SEMI FINAL 2

Terry Temple (26.93) 3-1 (26.82) Bob Pinder

Bob Pinder used only 2 words to describe his defeat to Terry Temple, ’1st leg’ was all he could say as he made his way disconsolately back to the table afterwards, those words were all he needed though and summed up his thoughts and everyone else’s perfectly because he never really recovered from losing the opening leg after hitting scores of 180, 95 and 177 to leave 24 after just 12 darts, many a player may have given the leg up at this point but Terry Temple is too much of a professional to do that and he kept close enough order to pinch the leg after Bob missed with 6 darts at D12 and D6. That really was a kick in the teeth for Bob and although he had 4 scores in the 80′s in the following leg it was nowhere near good enough to prevent Terry going 2-0 up with his 2nd leg of 18 darts. A solid 17 dart hold from the Sheffield man gave him hope but the damage had already been done and Terry shut him out with a rock steady 16 darter for the match. Another heartbreaking Semi Final defeat for Bob who deserves to win a BDP soon while Terry just keeps on rolling, 5 x 100′s again strongly backed up with 7 other scores over 80, very similar scoring from Bob with 4 x 100 pluses and 9 x 80 plus scores. In a game this tight one mistake costs the game and that was the story of this match.

FINAL

Dave Wilson (24.90) 4-1 (24.03) Terry Temple

Wilson v Temple would have been most pundits choice as the perceived Final before start of play and so it proved, only the Wilson in question wasn’t new England International James but elder brother Dave who was having his turn in the spotlight. Although Dave has won BDP Comps in the past it has been quite a while since he has featured in the latter stages so Terry was the clear favourite to add to his 3 Titles already this season. Superb finishes of 95 and 78 in 18 and 17 darts opened up a 2-0 lead for Dave and Terry was under the cosh, however the York Pro was in a similar position in the last Final against Les Delderfield and fought back to turn the game on its head and despite not been able to find his fluency like he did in that game he still managed to pull the 3rd leg back with a 24 darter, the half expected comeback never materialised, despite a big 180 shot from Terry to leave 36 after 15 darts in leg 4 it was Dave closing out the leg in 18 darts after a 177 early in the peace helped him down to the Double first on throw. All to do now for Terry and for the first time at BDP he was found wanting as he missed 9 darts at Doubles to save it which is unheard of for Terry and Dave stepped in to finally nail the winning D8 at the 7th attempt. A scrappy end to an otherwise entertaining Final with Dave putting his name back on the map with little brother James for once having to play second fiddle this time round. Steady scoring from Dave with 8 x 100 pluses and 5 other scores over 80 as back up, while Terry not as prolific as in previous Finals with only 6 x 100 pluses although he did hit 5 other scores in the 90′s but a few too many uncharacteristic low scores cost him just as much as the missed chances at the end.

SUMMARY

Dave Wilson finally ends Terry Temple’s amazing run of 27 consecutive winning games spanning over 4 Competitions, just shading Les Delderfield’s 26 game unbeaten streak in 2011. Out of Terry’s 27 games he played 25 different players including the man who finally beat him, Dave Wilson at Rowland Road and only played 2 players twice, Brendan Marren and Tony Darlow. A fine achievement that will take some beating. Also a day when a lot of the young players came of age and they look like being a real force to be reckoned with in future tournaments. As for Dave Wilson, not just success on the oche but off it too having a major result by managing to pull stunning girlfriend Natalie around a year ago, not only that but as Nat proudly boasts that she was the one that asked Dave for a date in the first place, no wonder the Huddersfield ace was smiling broadly.

A trip to the East side of Leeds for the third event of the season as the BDP roadshow set up camp in East Leeds Snooker Club, slightly off the beaten track at the back of the Manston estate. A superb set up in the Club with 6 boards in a row fixed to a blue back wall with excellent lighting ensuring no shadows, on the opposite wall were 2 other fixed boards so a little less work to do this week regarding setting up for our hard working BDP staff. A plush restaurant at the front of the Club provided a top of the range menu or alternatively a traditional Cafe just opposite the Club entrance served up a tremendous full monty breakfast with a pot of tea for only £3 which quite a few players enjoyed before play started. Besides hosting a newly formed Super League side, small Comps are played here regularly during the week with the Club sponsoring a high pay out Competition ran on the last Friday evening in the calendar month which also runs a 1st Round losers Plate Comp if time permits so well worth turning up for to win some good money and to keep sharp and competitive. The attendance figure would probably have topped 150 had the Dutch Open not been in full swing the same weekend, as it was 139 entries still highly respectable given the cold snap of weather that was forecast for the weekend. The question on the playing front, could anyone stop Terry Temple from making it a hat trick of back to back wins.

ROUND 1 (PRELIM)

Louise Simmonds 3-2 Ian Watson
Gary Hooper 3-1 Anil Barot
Peter Reebanks 3-0 Scott Smith
Jonathan Daniels 3-0 Mark Hanslip
Ian Brown 3-1 Mark Watkins

Kevin Gray 3-0 Shirley Sanderson
Simon Regan 3-0 Michael Wilson

A total of 11 Round 1 (prelim) games needed to streamline the field to 128. Newcomer this season Anil Barot (20.85) of Indian descent but from the other side of Leeds in Morley giving the much more seasoned and experienced Gary Hooper (22.29) a run for his money before going down 3-1. The 18 year old computer student looks a promising dart player but is also a promising cricketer and is a demon fast bowler for Gildersome CC, maybe he could be the new Kapil Dev, in which case let’s hope he chooses to play for England rather than India in future Test Matches. A huge crowd descended around Board 1 especially towards the closing stages of Louise Simmonds game with Ian Watson, almost unbearable tension as both players had darts at doubles to win the game and both ending up in the Madhouse before Louise finally clinched a nail biting victory. After performing superbly here to reach the Semi Final of the end of month Friday night comp Woodlesford Furniture Sales Manager Chris Cortman (22.95) was back for a shot at the bigger BDP event and safely through the opener after a 3-1 win over Chris Thwaites (17.40). Remarkable in fact that he can even hold a dart let alone throw them so well after losing part of 3 fingers to a Band Saw at work in his late teens. Big finishes of 110 and 150 from Ian Brown in his 3-1 win over Mark Watkins showing he is close to his best and a force to be reckoned with once again.

Some intriguing match up’s as early as Round 2 with a number of quality players going out at this stage. Bob Pinder the Grand Final Semi Finalist was amongst the biggest as he went down to star of the future Jamie Ogley 3-2. Dave Shore (24.41) a Semi Finalist at Rowland Road in Comp 1 also perished but in the toughest of early draws losing 3-1 to current Grand Slam Champ Tony Darlow (28.40) who finished their match with a 13 dart leg. Andrew Butterworth (24.24) a local league player for Stanningley pub ‘The Daisy Inn’ causing a major stir with a 3-0 whitewash over Jonathan Hewitt (25.83) one of the most feared players at BDP, no sign of what was to come as Jonathan kicked in with a 180 but then felt the backlash of big scores coming back at him as the Bramley Printer rattled in a Maximum of his own, 7 other Ton pluses and was the more composed finisher as he coolly took out 76 for the match to leave the Wortley star shell-shocked, no wonder East Leeds SC are so keen to sign him up for their SL team on this evidence. Once again Danny Walker (28.90) looking electric early on with 112 and 106 checkouts in a 3-0 win, much too strong today for Sheffield’s Mark Piggott. A welcome return this season for Bradford’s Kevin Gray (21.28) who took out 75 in the final leg to win a marathon battle against Aaron Poole (19.65). Tough going also for Rob Holroyd (18.42) as he scraped past Josh Scales (17.41) in another long drawn out struggle in a desperately poor game by their standards. Skipton’s Mick Hayward (17.72) did enough to beat Ian Payne (13.33) 3-1, same score too for John Jagger (22.34) as he beat Trevor Tye (20.90). Notts star Daz Layden (23.86) by own admission struggling for form of late and probably glad that Mick Wiltshire (19.90) was below par today allowing him a comfortable 3-0 passage into Round 3. Well below par too for Kelvin Pease (18.79) missing a hatful of doubles but not costly as he still had enough to beat Sam Newman (16.95) 3-0. A game of two halves for Steve Hattersley (21.37), dreadful early on allowing Adam Tooley (18.16)the luxury of winning legs in 26 and 29 darts before waking up to win the next 3 with relative ease in 19, 16 and 23 darts. All in all a hit and miss round, some good performances but also a lot of players struggling to find the range and playing well below their normal level so far.

ROUND 3

Steve Kemp 3-0 Pat Meeson
Graham Hoggarth 3-0 Mark Robinson
Jason Stockings 3-1 Daniel Firth
Daz Layden 3-1 Kelvin Pease
Pat Blakely 3-2 John Jagger

Paul Toulmin 3-1 Curtis Turner

During the last Round with the schedule running a little late the 2 boards on the opposite wall became match boards rather than practise boards, the fact that they weren’t used to start with probably because they didn’t have raised oche’s which is the normal requirement, however credit to all players who got on with the games without any complaints. Certainly no complaints from Rich Winpenny (26.51) on Board 7 as he hit 9 x 100 pluses to beat off a stiff challenge from Alex Pride (23.79), closing out the match with a 16 dart leg. Terry Temple (25.47) coasting into the next round with a comfortable 3-0 win over Mick Hayward (21.21). Ian Brown added a 126 on the bull to his repertoire of big finishes to see off Kevin Gray, while Simon Regan repelled a Danny Walker fightback to win 3-2. Ferry Fryston Quarter Finalists Rob Richardson and Simon Wintle both out but no real surprise losing to quality players Rob Holroyd and Paul Hick.

ROUND 4

Graham Hoggarth 3-2 Steve Kemp
Daz Layden 3-0 Jason Stockings
Vernon Walsh 3-2 Pat Blakely
Steve Kelly 3-1 Ian Brown

Terry Temple 3-2 Andy Firth
Pete Reebanks 3-1 Andy Butterworth
Tony Darlow 3-2 Nigel Atkinson
John Richardson 3-2 Dave Machell
Gary Hooper 3-1 Sam Fordham
Les Delderfield 3-0 Rob Holroyd
Willie Kershaw 3-1 Peter Armitage
Brandon Walsh 3-0 Jonathan Daniels
Jon Crossland 3-2 Steve Hattersley
Rich Winpenny 3-1 Paul Hick
Paul Toulmin 3-1 Mark Leonard

A tougher test in this round for Terry Temple as he faced Andy ‘The Voice’ Firth. The Doncaster man a renown singer, entertainer and PDC pro marker as well as a good dart player and fresh from some fine displays at PDC Q school, although Andy didn’t manage to qualify he won games and gave a good account of himself as he did here taking Terry to a decider as have a few players in the opening 3 tournaments, however no one as yet has managed to come up with a big 5th leg in order to beat him. Another Doncaster player, Yorkshire Youths Brandon Walsh also with some great performances at the PDC Q school a couple of weeks ago and taking that form into today with an impressive 3-0 win over Jonathan Daniels, while dad Vernon kept up the good work to join his son in the last 16 with a narrow 3-2 victory over Pat Blakely. John Richardson more or less used to show up at Comps to support son Kyle and enter for the fun of it, not the case anymore as John has realised he is actually a very good dart player and is getting down to the money stages regularly these days, a 3-2 win over Dave Machell takes him there again much to the delight of Mrs Richardson. Board 1 has been a nightmare for Jason Stockings (15.80), the previous Friday in the Plate Semi he couldn’t buy a double and lost, today on the same board he just couldn’t hit the scores as Daz Layden (21.78) strolled past him and into the next round. A dose of his own medicine for Ian Brown (20.01) as Steve Kelly (22.41) wrapped up a 3-1 win against him with a 110 finish, while a 121 finish on the bull proved to be the decisive break for Rich Winpenny in a 3-1 win over Paul Hick.

ROUND 5

Daz Layden 3-1 Graham Hoggarth
Steve Kelly 3-0 Vernon Walsh
Terry Temple 3-0 Simon Regan
Tony Darlow 3-2 Pete Reebanks
Gary Hooper 3-1 John Richardson
Les Delderfield 3-0 Willie Kershaw
Brandon Walsh 3-0 Jon Crossland
Rich Winpenny 3-2 Paul Toulmin

Up and coming football Referee Graham Hoggarth now up to Conference League level and destined to become the next Howard Webb was in the warm today as his allocated match had been postponed due to the weather. Besides taking a few match stats for the BDP report he was also having a fine day on the oche to reach the money stages where Daz Layden ended his run with a 3-1 victory. Still only 18 years old Brandon Walsh already has quite a darting CV with an appearance at the 2011 UK Open, a PDC Youth tour player and also the Yorkshire Youth Captain and closing in on a BDP title after a straight legs win over Pontefract’s Jon Crossland. Les Delderfield yet to drop a leg all day overcoming fellow Woodbottom SL team mate Willie Kershaw also 3-0 and looking at this stage like the likely challenger to Terry Temple (27.83) who proved too strong for Bradford’s Simon Regan (21.39) with another straight forward victory. Friday night Plate winner Rich Winpenny came from 2-0 down to topple Paul Toulmin with a 104 finish at the death to seal a 3-2 win in a thrilling game. Gary Hooper concentrating this year on local Comps rather than travelling the BDO circuit also into the Last 8 with a 3-1 win over John Richardson. Not the result that Gary’s uncle Pete Reebanks wanted but a fine effort none the less in a narrow 3-2 defeat to Tony Darlow, while veteran Steve Kelly having a great start to the season making his second venture already into the Quarter Finals after a 3-0 win over Vernon Walsh.

QUARTER FINALS

Daz Layden 3-2 Steve Kelly
Terry Temple 3-1 Tony Darlow
Les Delderfield 3-1 Gary Hooper
Rich Winpenny 3-0 Brandon Walsh

Shipley legend Les Delderfield finally dropped a leg to Gary Hooper but the Lancashire County star unable to prevent Les notching the other 3 to march into the Semi’s. Same result for Terry Temple to see off another tough challenge from Tony Darlow this time, the York star still on course for an unprecedented hat trick of wins, while Daz Layden edged past Steve Kelly 3-2 to equal his best showing since his BDP debut at Crigglestone last season, while clinical finishing from Rich Winpenny proved the difference in a high scoring battle with Brandon Walsh.

SEMI FINAL 1

Les Delderfield (27.33) 3-0 (24.98) Rich Winpenny

Woodlesford’s Rich Winpenny won the advantage of throw but didn’t make it count as he lost all 3 legs to Les Delderfield in 19, 18 and 18 darts. All credit to Les though with a workmanlike performance and particularly good on the finishing to snuff out any chance of a fight back from The Railway SL player. Trebles in the first leg proved elusive for Rich apart from his opening throw of 100 which allowed Les in for the early break who then held off a determined effort from the South Leeds man to get back in the game in the next leg leaving 46 after 15 darts, however the door was slammed firmly shut as Les showed all his class to hit a 140 and then take out the 70 finish to go 2-0 up. A closely fought third leg again settled by superb darts from Les at the end hitting a 138 set up followed by a 56 finish after Rich just missed D14 on a 108 finish to save it, those kind of shots had been going in for him all day but not this time and no second chance. 6 x 100 pluses and 2 x 90 odds for Les with Rich replying with 5 x 100′s and 2 x 90 odds but not quite enough.

SEMI FINAL 2

Terry Temple (28.90) 3-0 (20.92) Daz Layden

A fairly one sided game as Terry Temple comfortably swept past Daz Layden who just couldn’t find the Treble 20′s to put up enough of a challenge. Surprisingly without hitting a 3 figure score in leg 2 the North Notts man still had 2 darts at tops to level up at 1-1, once that chance had gone begging the outcome looked inevitable and so it was as Terry clicked back into gear with a 14 dart final leg with Daz way back on 240, to follow up earlier 16 and 22 darters. A good day for Daz although he will be disappointed with his showing in the Semi as he only hit 1 x 100 score, ironically with his last 3 darts, a series of 60 scores for him with the darts just not landing in that narrow red section which can be so frustrating. Only 3 x 100 pluses for Terry but the 7 back up scores in the 80′s and 90′s kept Daz under the cosh.

FINAL

Terry Temple (29.00) 4-2 (27.66) Les Delderfield

If anyone in today’s field was going to stop Terry Temple it was likely to be the vastly experienced, ice cool figure of Les Delderfield and for a while in the Final that looked to be the case with Les racing into a 2-0 lead with 16 and 17 dart legs, a brilliant 180, 140, 81 start to leg 3 looked like paving the way for a 3-0 lead for Les, however with the match almost at his mercy he missed 5 darts at Tops and Tens to give Terry a shot at 62 which he gratefully accepted to get a foothold in the game. A complete turnaround after that as Terry took control firstly levelling the game with a 19 darter then forging in front with a tremendous 13 dart leg against the throw as Les was left with 50 after 15 darts. A 140, 99, 98, 96 text book leg from Terry ensured there would be no way back for Les as the York man closed out D8 for an 18 dart match winner and a third successive title which very few have managed to achieve previously. A 180, 177, 8 x 100 pluses with 7 x 90 odd scores did the damage for Terry with Les firing back with 2 x 180′s, 11 x 100 pluses with a 93 score but was left to rue those 5 misses in leg 3 which effectively cost him the match.

SUMMARY

Terry Temple makes history by becoming the first player to win the first 3 tournaments at the start of a season since records began and moves into BDP folklaw in doing so. York has produced many fine dart players over the years, the likes of Barry Noble, Chris Thompson, John Mooring, Paul Cooper, Martin Turner, Ray McInally, Rich Corner amongst others all spring to mind and Terry is right there in that top band of players. Can he possibly make it 4 in a row at Tyresal in a couple of weeks? In the meantime the players that were still at East Leeds SC towards the closing stages faced the possibility of being stranded for the night with the snow coming down heavy and temperatures plummeting to freezing point as treacherous road conditions meant the local taxi’s were reluctant to venture too far from the main roads, hopefully the weather won’t be as harsh next time out at Tyresal.

A new venue for the 2nd Comp of the season, Ferry Fryston MWC located in a former mining superb of Castleford nearly 3 miles east of the town centre. Attendances have always been good whenever BDP events have ventured along the M62 to this hotbed of darts region and today was no exception with 149 entries. The Club itself again ideal for a BDP comp with a decent size playing room with 9 Boards in a row at the front with plenty of tables and chairs for spectators with the bar at the rear, a busy bustling room with a cracking atmosphere. The AGM held the previous Sunday at the Harold Club was sparsely attended with mainly only the Committee members present, apart from a few suggestions on the BDP Facebook website the lack of input on the day would suggest to me that most players must be reasonably happy with the way the Comps are run etc, however proposals are afoot to make quite a few changes to the rules and formats as were documented in the leaflets distributed on the day. Hard to gauge the general feelings on these changes but my own are that some are fair and a lot could be controversial and maybe not necessary. Firstly introducing a £20 prize for furthest Lady and Youth might be a good move and encourage more Ladies and Youths to attend, also to avoid the uncertainty of the Final Tables regarding eligibility the Ladies and Youths will have to make their intentions known by Feb 25th as to which event they want to play in on Grand Finals day and stick with that decision. Also the Doubles Comp on Grand Finals day may only be eligible to players who have attended at least 1 BDP event during the season which is fair enough I would say. The rest of the proposals I am not too sure about. Upping the fee on the day to £6 could be a step too far for a lot of the casual and less serious players amongst us who make up a lot of the numbers, a fiver is plenty enough at this level of competition. A proposed £50 prize for highest check out on the day is way too much in my opinion, can’t see how a 3 dart shot out can warrant as much as a Semi Final place where a player has had to battle through 5 or 6 tough games to get there, £20 at the most is a reasonable prize. Talk also of 6 Double points events during the season which is an innovative idea but could also be deemed as unfair especially if players lose out on a place in The Grand Finals because of it, can only see controversy at the end of the season with that one if I am honest. Finally there could be a danger that by ruling that the Ladies and Youths have to play at least 10 events to qualify for the Finals that we could have a scenario of a Ladies Finals day with less than 8 competitors which would be farcical but a possibility given that last season only 6 Ladies met this criteria and 2 of those played in the Main Event, maybe stipulate attending at least 8 might be wiser. Back to today and on the playing front Terry Temple returned with a few reinforcements from York Darts including Steve Atkin, Dave Scaum, John Quantock and Simon Rimmington all looking to make an impression as were the Lincolnshire crew including Jamie Ellam, Scott Bennett, Adam Ward, Danny Lidgett and Jamie Toyne, good to see players from outside the local area turning up in numbers.

A tough task early on for Rob Holroyd as he went down 3-1 to York’s John Quantock, ‘Mr Q’ a vastly experienced and top level competitor having competed for a few years on the PDC circuit and appearing a couple of times in the UK Open Finals in Bolton. At the other end of the scale youth player Jake Patchett a product of the Hull Darts School of Excellence scored a notable 3-0 victory over Mark Featherstone who reached the Last 16 in the opening comp at Rowland Road. Sheffield’s Bob Pinder sporting a very dodgy looking Alan Tabern style moustache led Ian Brown 2-0 in their match but ended up succumbing to a superb fightback from the Castleford ace. A good round for the leading ladies as Laura Tye and Louise Simmonds both came through their games 3-1.

Jamie Ogley 3-2 Mark Leonard
Carl Wilkinson 3-0 Sharon Whitfield
Kelvin Pease 3-0 Rich Winpenny

John Utting 3-1 Pete Riley
Ian Ward 3-2 Danny Hall
Mike Ramsgill 3-0 Shirley Sanderson
Dale Everett 3-2 Andy Smith
Jake Patchett 3-1 Chris Winters
Josh Clough 3-0 Mark Calvert
Colin Hendry 3-1 Dave Scaum
Steve Atkinson 3-0 Aaron Poole

A fairly comfortable 3-0 victory for Steve Hattersley (23.86) as Kyle Richardson (20.27) only really began to get into the game in the last leg, by then it was too late as the Halifax man closed out the game in 17 darts. John Clifford (17.68) made hard work of it even though he still overcame elder statesman Bob Brett (14.59) 3-0, who just couldn’t get going in their game. A very even looking game went to John Utting (23.44) 3-1 over Pete Riley (21.49), steady darts and a much needed win for the Doncaster man. Paul Hick’s fine form continued with a 3-1 victory over high profile Leeds star Stuart Monaghan while Adam Tooley paid the price for a late arrival and no warm up time after dashing from work, slipping to a 3-0 defeat to Jason Stockings, ‘The Spice Boy’ closing the match with a nice 116 finish. A comfortable 3-0 win for Knottingley Welder Mike Ramsgill over Shirley Sanderson as he looks to make an impression this season, already making an impression is Keighley’s Dave Shore after an fantastic Semi Final showing last time out but he was stunned today by a brilliant Laura Tye performance who just missed a 12 darter in her 3-2 victory over him. Meanwhile Tadcaster Carpet Fitter Curtis Turner followed up last week’s impressive showing with another eye-catching win, this time rolling over classy Notts star Daz Layden 3-0. A blast from the past as Halifax’s Lyndon Baxter so successful in the early BDP years making a comeback this season edging past local man Roy Lilleyman 3-2, while Les Delderfield who has never been away looked in good form with a straight legs win over Lincoln Rileys Super League star Jamie Ellam.

ROUND 3

Steve Jones 3-1 Jamie Toyne
Simon Wintle 3-1 Mark Pigott
Josh Scales 3-0 Phil Whittaker
Paul Toulmin 3-2 Daz Mawer
Vernon Walsh 3-2 Dave Sidebottom
Terry Temple 3-0 Jason Stockings
Alex Pride 3-0 Jamie Ingle
Tom Blagg 3-2 Ian Watson
Jonathan Crossland 3-0 Paul Doherty
Peter Mawer 3-0 Curtis Turner
Daniel Roberts 3-2 Scott Smith
Louise Simmonds 3-2 Steve Fryer
Tony Darlow 3-1 Les Delderfield
Steve Hattersley 3-2 Bob Birkenshaw
Scott Bennett 3-2 Paul Hick
John Quantock 3-1 Mick Hayward
Kevin Foster 3-1 Peter Baker
Rob Richardson 3-1 Jaron Esteve
James Weldon 3-0 Tom Sykes
John Clifford 3-0 Alan Hutchinson
Lyndon Baxter 3-2 Mick Wiltshire
Steve Kelly 3-1 Laura Tye
Danny Walker 3-0 Norman Elliott
Brendan Marren 3-1 Tony Wort
Adam Ward 3-0 Jamie Ogley
Carl Wilkinson 3-2 Kelvin Pease
Willie Kershaw 3-1 James Barton
Simon Crossland 3-0 Ryan Hoggarth
John Utting 3-0 Ian Ward
Dale Everett 3-0 Mike Ramsgill
Jake Patchett 3-2 Josh Clough
Steve Atkin 3-1 Colin Hendry

26 year old Danny Walker (29.47) on the verge of securing a lucrative sponsorship deal that will enable him to travel the BDO circuit showed his class to rattle in 21, 16 and 14 dart legs to overcome a game effort from Norman Elliott (23.41) who pushed him all the way in the final 2 legs. Woodbottom SL player Paul Doherty (19.90) scored well but had a disaster in the final leg, missing 13 darts at doubles to let Jonathan Crossland (20.87) in to secure a harsh looking 3-0 win. Fine last legs for John Utting with a 153 finish to beat Ian Ward 3-0 and Louise Simmonds with a 17 darter which included a 180 to overcome Steve Fryer. Steve Hattersley pulled out a game changing 155 finish with his opponent Bob Birkenshaw sat on tops and 1-0 up at the time, a tremendous shot under pressure enabling him to edge a tight match 3-2. Grand Final winner Tony Darlow took out Les Delderfield 3-1 as did Willie Kershaw beating James Barton in the two big games of the round.

ROUND 4

Simon Wintle 3-2 Steve Jones
Paul Toulmin 3-1 Josh Scales
Terry Temple 3-1 Vernon Walsh
Tom Blagg 3-1 Alex Pride
Jonathan Crossland 3-1 Peter Mawer
Daniel Roberts 3-1 Louise Simmonds
Tony Darlow 3-1 Steve Hattersley
John Quantock 3-1 Scott Bennett
Rob Richardson 3-0 Kevin Foster
James Weldon 3-2 John Clifford
Steve Kelly 3-2 Lyndon Baxter
Brendan Marren 3-1 Danny Walker
Adam Ward 3-0 Carl Wilkinson
Willie Kershaw 3-0 Simon Crossland
Dale Everett 3-1 John Utting
Steve Atkin 3-1 Jake Patchett

Quite a few newish names right in the mix at this stage. Former Commercial and Yeadon SL star Paul Toulmin now plying his trade for Shipley team Woodbottom having a fine day so far with wins over Yorkshire County youth Reece Catton, former Lincs County star Daz Mawer and now Wakefield ace Josh Scales. Nottinghamshire County youth Tom Blagg who appeared at a couple of tournaments last year was making serious inroads today with wins over Mark Gale, Ian Watson and former BDP event winner Alex Pride with a fine 3-1 victory. Daniel Roberts another new player this season also going well ending inform Louise Simmonds run with a 3-1 win. Halifax’s Dale Everett a onetime sponsor of Scott Waites and influential in his early BDO tournament development showed he is no slouch on the dart board either with a place in Round 5 after victory over John Utting on the back of a fine showing in a Hartlepool comp over new year. James Weldon another player present in early tournaments last year was having his best run so far after a 3-2 victory over John Clifford, while Danny Walker said he threw the darts of his life with well over 100 average but it was still not enough to beat Brendan Marren who chipped out 120 to close out a 3-1 win over him.

ROUND 5

Simon Wintle 3-2 Paul Toulmin
Terry Temple 3-0 Tom Blagg
Jonathan Crossland 3-2 Daniel Roberts
Tony Darlow 3-1 John Quantock
Rob Richardson 3-0 James Weldon
Brendan Marren 3-0 Steve Kelly
Willie Kershaw 3-1 Adam Ward
Dale Everett 3-1 Steve Atkin

Most of the players mentioned in the last round were to fall at the next hurdle, apart from Dale Everett who stormed into the Quarter Finals with a 3-1 win over York’s Steve Atkin. Lincoln Imps SL player Adam Ward, riding high in the Lincs Ave’s table and carrying that form into today with 3 good wins over quality players Tony Farrow, Jamie Ogley and Yorkshire County player Carl Wilkinson found Willie Kershaw a bridge too far with a 3-1 defeat. Big guns Brendan Marren and Tony Darlow still going strong after victories over Steve Kelly and John Quantock, while the ominous threat of Terry Temple still loomed large after victory over young Tom Blagg. Rob ‘ The Jockey ‘ Richardson the lone Castleford survivor with victory over James Weldon with Si Wintle and Jonathan Crossland making up the Last 8 after close wins over Paul Toulmin and Daniel Roberts.

QUARTER FINALS

Terry Temple 3-2 Simon Wintle
Tony Darlow 3-0 John Crossland
Brendan Marren 3-2 Rob Richardson
Willie Kershaw 3-1 Dale Everett

Guiseley’s Simon Wintle living up to his nickname of ‘The Big Bear ‘ by sporting a big rough, gruff, hairy black beard showed he was a ‘Grizzly’ on the dart board today and came close to a first Semi Final after pushing Terry Temple all the way before going down 3-2. A very under rated player, mostly by himself it has to be said Simon is one of the fastest throwing players at BDP and is great to watch when he’s flying like he was today. Another super effort to topple a hot favourite as Rob Richardson took Brendan Marren to a decider in their game, just another example of how many players in the field are capable of winning a BDP comp, no doubt Rob is in that category especially after this showing. A bit more breathing space for the other 2 favourites as Tony Darlow saw off Pontefract’s Jonathan Crossland 3-0 and Willie Kershaw overcame a brave Dale Everett effort 3-1.

SEMI FINAL 1

Brendan Marren (27.33) 3-0 (26.06) Willie Kershaw

Just too many slack scores in legs 1 and 3 in particular cost Willie Kershaw dear in this Semi Final clash of two old foes, the fact is against a player of Brendan Marren’s class the opponent can ill afford any such scores. A very indifferent opening leg from Willie allowed Brendan the luxury of missing 5 darts at the double before nailing a D10 for a 20 dart start, ironically there was no slack darts from Willie on his own throw as he fired in scores of 85, 60, 140, 140 to set up 76 with the final dart in that combination just missing Tops, that miss was all Brendan needed as he took out a killer 101 finish to go 2-0 up in 15 darts. The final leg was similar in pattern to the first one as Brendan took it in 20 darts again although Willie was much closer in this leg having a shot at 100 to save it. Not vintage stuff by either player but Brendan had the greater consistency in scoring with 8 x 100 pluses against Willie’s 5 x 100 pluses which made the difference.

SEMI FINAL 2

Terry Temple (25.49) 3-1 (22.91) Tony Darlow

A fine opening for current Grand Slam champion Tony Darlow as he broke the throw with a 105 finish and a 18 dart leg to break against opening event winner Terry Temple, however that was to be as good as it got for the Sheffield star as he seemed to lose his way after that as the Treble 20 became more elusive to him as the game went on. Despite struggling a little on the scoring himself Terry was able to take the next 2 legs in 21 and 22 darts, only in the final leg did the man from York really get going with a 140, 180, 95 opening which effectively sealed the game as Tony could only respond with a string of 60 scores allowing Terry to coast home in 17 darts for a much more comfortable win than he could have hoped for given Tony’s present form. 8 x 100 pluses including a 180 for Terry while Tony will be disappointed with only 4 x 100 pluses but so many times his darts were all over the Treble 20 rather than in it, just one of those games for him today.

FINAL

Terry Temple (27.29) 4-1 (27.38) Brendan Marren

A 2nd successive BDP title for Terry Temple as he had Brendan Marren’s number again just as he did in the Rowland Road Quarter Final the previous week. Although not quite matching last week’s imperious form Terry still managed to do enough to win, just beating Brendan to the punch in 4 of the 5 legs, this mainly down to the fact that Brendan hit 11 x 60 scores in the match where in usual circumstances he would expect at least half of those scores to be either 100′s or 140′s, that lack of trebles just enabled Terry to get to the double shots first and what we have learned about Terry so far is that more often than not he takes his chances when they come. Just like Tony Darlow in the Semi Brendan started brightly with a 16 dart break with a similar pattern to follow as Terry took the rest in 16, 21, 18 and 16 darts for a convincing victory in the end. 11 x 100 pluses for Terry with 4 back up scores of 90 odd. Also 11 x 100 pluses for Brendan even allowing for all the straight 60′s which probably goes to show how different the game might have been had even 3 or 4 of those been ton pluses that would have got him to the doubles first, all if’s and but’s though as is every game, the main fact being that Terry got the job done once again.

SUMMARY

The PDC qualifying school was in full swing over a long weekend with a long list of fine tour players including BDP regular Dave Smith having to re-qualify in order to get their 2012 tour card. The fact that Terry Temple didn’t have to go through that minefield because he finished in the Top 64 shows how good a player he is as he proved here for the 2nd week running. No doubt the rest of the field will be breathing a sigh of relief when the PDC tour starts up and Terry goes off to try and claim bigger prizes. Last season Castleford player Kevin Pease looked certain to qualify for The Grand Finals only to miss out in the end due to not attending the last half a dozen or so events, the reason for those absences became apparent today as Kevin turned up to play showing the effects of a battle against throat cancer over the past few months, it was good to Kev back in action on the oche and everyone at BDP wishes him well with his ongoing treatment which we hope will lead to a full recovery.

The eagerly anticipated 2012 season underway at Rowland Road, Beeston, Leeds, the preferred venue for the opening event which always attracts a large number of players especially with darts at the forefront at the moment with the PDC World Championships just played out at the Ally Pally in London and the BDO’s Lakeside World Championships currently at the Semi Final stages. A total of 169 players, falling someway short of last year’s amazing 214 total, however still a superb turn out considering 2 other events were also taking place on the same day, a charity event at The Roebuck and also a very high profile competition at The Crown Hotel in Bawtry which meant most of the South Yorkshire contingent were there rather than here. Any new proposals would be announced at the following comp due to the AGM meeting being postponed for a later date.

Definitely a lot of tension in the air at the start as everyone involved early on just wanted to get through the round of 41 prelim ties in order to bring the field down to 128, a very tense, nervy game between Mark Featherstone ( 16.79 ) and Simon Hall ( 16.30 ) going Mark’s way 3-1 but both much better players than the stats suggest so purely down to early nerves that game. Nerves too for young Lewis Pride ( 17.61 ) as he lost out 3-0 to another youngster in Ben Gayle ( 19.27 ) from nearby Middleton, more joy for the Gayle family as dad Simon Gayle ( 17.15 ) followed up his son’s win with a 3-1 success over James Wood ( 17.01 ). Top darts promoter Paul Hodkin from Huddersfield, responsible for bringing some of the top names in darts to Yorkshire with his superbly organised exhibitions can also play a bit too and has mixed it on the PDC circuit, however he was no match today for Dave Calvert who beat him comfortably 3-0. Young Joe Harrison gaining in experience under the guidance of dad Bryan and Ian Brown amongst others in and around Castleford pulled off the result of the round with a 3-2 defeat of Mick Wiltshire who was so impressive on Grand Finals day. John Utting another player with some pedigree also lost out 3-1 to an unfamiliar name in Tom Sykes. The best darts of the round came from Outwood’s Danny Walker as he crashed in a 161 finish for a 12 dart final leg in his victory over the unfortunate Gary Smith.

Dave Wilson 3-1 Mally Walsh
Tony Wort 3-0 Tony Toyne
Liam Young 3-1 Peter Mizen
Paul Hick 3-0 Mick Hayward

A good round for 2 familiar players on the comeback trail, firstly ‘ The Iceman ‘ Chris Hall ( 22.92 ) from East End Park, very steady with a fine 3-1 win over talented youngster Jordan Smith ( 22.53 ) and also ‘ The Rattler’ Paul Hick, missing for much of last season due to work commitments as a lorry driver but back with a vengeance today with checkouts of 120, 131 and 117 in his 3-0 victory over Mick Hayward, not very often even on the World stage you see 3 back to back ton plus finishes, brilliant from the likeable Carlton ace. An exhibition start from James Barton ( 22.40 ) as he took out 100 with a single 20 and 2 Double Tops against Danny Walker ( 22.53 ), however the rest of the game not quite so good especially the final leg where both players missed with 9 double attempts before James clinched it. The tie of the round saw inform Jaron Esteve edge out class act Peter Armitage 3-2 in a high quality game. Elsewhere no major shocks with all the big guns coming through unscathed.

ROUND 3

Bryan Harrison 3-1 Adam Davidson
Fred Smith 3-0 Richard Lucas
Daz Hale 3-2 Andy McGovern
Kelvin Pease 3-0 Mark Calvert
Curtis Turner 3-1 Mark Gayle

Jaron Esteve 3-1 Steve Hattersley
Alex Pride 3-1 Chris Hall
Ian Watson 3-0 Adam Wood
Daniel Roberts 3-1 Trevor Tye
Steve Kelly 3-1 Simon Wintle
Mick Pearce 3-1 Eddy Noon
Willie Kershaw 3-2 Dave Smith
James Barton 3-2 John Richardson
Darren Goy 3-1 Phil Whittaker
Peter Reebanks 3-0 Kyle Richardson
Josh Clough 3-0 Richard Watson
Dave Calvert 3-0 Tom Sykes
Antony Moss 3-0 Simon Gayle
Les Delderfield 3-0 Aaron Poole
Rob Richardson 3-1 Andrew Clifford
Mark Featherstone 3-0 Michael Wilson
Brendan Dawson 3-0 Mark Watkins
Dave Shore 3-0 Gary Hooper
Jamie Ellam 3-0 Paul Toulmin
Daz Twist 3-1 Mark Hanslip
Brendan Marren 3-0 Nigel Atkinson
Ian Brown 3-1 Louise Simmonds
Rich Winpenny 3-1 Pete Riley
Terry Temple 3-0 Mark Wainwright
Dave Wilson 3-1 Tony Wort
Paul Hick 3-0 Liam Young

The first major clash of the season on Board 2, a new slimline Willie Kershaw having dropped a reputed 5 stones in weight edged out Dave Smith 3-2, the 70′s Wrestler now down to ‘Catchweight’. Lancashire County ace Gary Hooper in decent form over Xmas with a Semi Final spot in a high class non ranking event at Belle Isle was the big casualty as he fell 3-0 to Dave Shore, another player not all that familiar to BDP having played just one comp last season which was the very last one at Otley but looking like a player of some quality. A fine effort in defeat from East Leeds SL player John Richardson as he took James Barton the distance and no joy for son Kyle either as he went down 3-0 to the vastly experienced Pete Reebanks. No real surprises elsewhere with fitness fanatic Steve Hattersley, looking very trim these days and in form for most of last season losing out in a 50/50 game to ‘The Jazman’ Jaron Esteve.

ROUND 4

Fred Smith 3-1 Bryan Harrison
Daz Hale 3-1 Kelvin Pease
Curtis Turner 3-2 Bob Birkenshaw
Jaron Esteve 3-0 Alex Pride
Ian Watson 3-2 Daniel Roberts
Steve Kelly 3-1 Mick Pearce
Willie Kershaw 3-1 James Barton
Peter Reebanks 3-1 Darren Goy
Josh Clough 3-0 Dave Calvert
Les Delderfield 3-0 Antony Moss
Mark Featherstone 3-0 Rob Richardson
Dave Shore 3-2 Brendan Dawson
Daz Twist 3-0 Jamie Ellam
Brendan Marren 3-0 Ian Brown
Terry Temple 3-2 Rich Winpenny
Dave Wilson 3-1 Paul Hick

The competition certainly hotting up in Round 4 with some quality match ups. Yorkshire Youth U18 star Curtis Turner making a big impression in his first BDP event with a fine 3-2 victory over renown match player Bob Birkenshaw, the Tadcaster youngster also boasting a young Patsi Kensit lookalike girlfriend on his arm so good times ahead on and off the oche it seems for Curtis. York star Terry Temple a regular on the PDC circuit and in their Top 64 system which is a feat in itself given the calibre of players in that field was also trying out BDP for the first time and making steady progress so far but given a rough ride by Rich Winpenny, with the advantage of throw and a 180 start in the decider just about squeezing him through in the end with the Woodlesford player criminally missing big 11 for a shot at the bull on a 121 finish. Fred Smith from Middlewich in Cheshire always makes an impression whenever he comes over to BDP events, a 3-1 victory over Bryan Harrison meant he was in the latter stages once again. Castleford’s Yorkshire U18 star Josh Clough maybe in the headlines for the wrong reasons at The Grand Finals was certainly making headlines for the right reasons, this time on the oche with a stunning 3-0 victory over BDO tour player Dave Calvert, while Daz Twist saw off the dangerous Jamie Ellam 3-0 in an eventful round.

ROUND 5

Fred Smith 3-2 Daz Hale
Jaron Esteve 3-0 Curtis Turner
Steve Kelly 3-0 Ian Watson
Willie Kershaw 3-1 Peter Reebanks
Les Delderfield 3-0 Josh Clough
Dave Shore 3-1 Mark Featherstone
Brendan Marren 3-0 Daz Twist
Terry Temple 3-2 Dave Wilson

Relative newcomer Dave Shore ( 26.57 ) originally from Wiltshire but now residing in Keighley continuing to make a splash as he overpowered Mark Featherstone ( 21.40 ) by 3 legs to 1, the Otley player having no answer from 1-1 as his opponent rattled in impressive 17 and 16 darters to take the match. A fine debut tournament for Curtis Turner ended in defeat to Jaron Esteve, the olive skinned heart throb from Lofthouse in the form of his life at the moment winning 2 small local comps at East Leeds and finishing a gallant Runner Up to James Wilson at Belle Isle over New Year as well as scooping the Xmas Handicap at Rothwell Club so quite a fruitful few weeks for him with more to follow on this form. A great run from Crossgates Fencing Business Tycoon Ian Watson ended with defeat to veteran Steve Kelly while Terry Temple came through another tight game to win 3-2 over Dave Wilson as did Fred Smith over Daz Hale. The ever consistent trio of Delderfield, Marren and Kershaw all in the last 8 too after wins over Clough, Twist and Reebanks respectively.

QUARTER FINALS

Fred Smith 3-1 Jaron Esteve
Willie Kershaw 3-0 Steve Kelly
Dave Shore 3-0 Les Delderfield
Terry Temple 3-2 Brendan Marren

Clinical finishing from Fred Smith gave him the edge over Jaron Esteve with Willie Kershaw also coming through the top half of the draw with a 3-0 win over Steve Kelly. Real drama though in the bottom half as Terry Temple showed just what a class player he really is with yet another 3-2 victory, this time over the formidable Brendan Marren. The other result proved to be the major surprise as Dave Shore stunned everyone with a 3-0 victory over Les Delderfield, maybe the Shipley player, quiet and unemotional on the oche was ruffled by the much more vocal Keighley man, however can’t take anything away from the quality of his darts as he marched into the Semi’s and in sight of a remarkable tournament victory.

SEMI FINAL 1

Willie Kershaw ( 24.86 ) 3-1 ( 25.76 ) Fred Smith

Despite not firing on all cylinders Willie Kershaw’s superior finishing saw him home against Fred Smith in a close scoring affair. Both players though a little hit and miss throughout with quite a few low scores mixed in with the good scores. The best and most consistent leg came from Willie with a 15 darter in leg 3 against the throw to turn the tide his way, scores of 100, 140, 95, 98 and a 3 dart 68 finish coming in that leg. Before that both players broke throws, firstly Willie with a 21 darter, then Fred with a much more convincing 16 darter which included a Maximum mid way through. With a second break in the bag Willie managed to close out the match with a 20 darter after Fred had just missed a 112 shot to save it. Usually a big 140 hitter Willie only managed 1 in this game along with a 125 and 4 x 100 scores, with 3 x 90 odds to back up those scores, as for Fred only 2 really big scores a 180 and a 140, although he also hit a ton and 7 scores ranging from 92 to 97 but will probably feel with Willie not on top form that this was maybe a chance gone begging.

SEMI FINAL 2

Terry Temple ( 31.31 ) 3-0 ( 27.80 ) Dave Shore

A thoroughly professional display from Terry Temple to sweep aside an effort from Dave Shore that would have given him a real shout in most other games today. The fact that he didn’t really get a sniff is purely down to Terry’s excellence in allowing his opponent just 15 darts in each leg. The opening leg proved to be the closest with Dave’s shot at 100 his only real chance in the game, however with only 40 scored he didn’t get the shot at the double he was looking for allowing Terry to take out 20 for a 17 dart leg. The York star piled on relentless pressure to force the break in leg 2 with scores of 140, 140, 100 and 96 and despite a 140 reply from Dave to leave 136 he was powerless to prevent Terry taking out 25 in 2 clinical darts. Another brave effort in the last leg from Dave as he hit 139 and 80 at the end to leave 56 but yet again Terry had all the answers with a 2 dart finish on 60 for another 17 darter to seal the match and a very polished display with precious little weaknesses to exploit. A fine effort from Dave with 5 x 100 pluses and a 99 score to cap a superb day for him. 7 x 100′s and 3 x late 90 scores coupled with deadly finishing for Terry making him very difficult to beat on this form.

FINAL

Terry Temple ( 29.88 ) 4-2 ( 27.82 ) Willie Kershaw

Willie Kershaw probably knew that he would have to up his game considerably from the Semi Final if he was to have any chance against a player in top form all day long who was consistently around the 30/31 average mark. No sign either of Terry Temple letting up as he opened up with a 116 finish for a 15 darter, things looked even gloomier for Willie as he failed to hit a 3 figure score on throw which let Terry in for a 19 dart break, however the medium built Shipley man doesn’t take defeat lying down and roared back in typical Kershaw style with back to back 16 darters to level the game. The tables looked to have turned as Willie turned the screw in leg 5 and must have felt with just 68 left after 12 darts he had a great chance of a break with Terry on a very tricky looking 99, maybe playing week in week out at such a high standard on the PDC circuit he has become used to taking out these kind of pressure shots and he did so again here which was only to hold throw but must surely have felt like a break to Willie and a real body blow at that. An even last leg followed with Willie having first pop at 72 which he made a bit of a hash of in all truth and didn’t get a dart at the double and Terry just like he had done all day to every opponent gets a chance and takes it clinically to close out the match. A very entertaining Final to start the year off with Terry hitting 11 x 100 pluses and 5 x 90 odd scores which were all good but not as good as the 99 finish that effectively won him the match. As for Willie he upped his game like we knew he probably would to hit a 180, 9 x 100 pluses with 4 x 90 odd scores in a valiant attempt.

SUMMARY

Most of the field breathed a little easier at the start of the day knowing that James Wilson was on his way to terrorise the field at Bawtry for a change, however an adequate replacement had arrived in the shape of Terry Temple, without a PDC or York Darts event the approachable York player tried his hand at BDP and left very impressed with the standard of competition and the way it was run as well as walking away £350 better off. As for James Wilson, he went through the field like a knife through butter to eventually win with a 6-0 victory over Notts player Paul Harvey in the Final just to underline how dominant he is at the moment. As they did last season with bumper attendances the Committee pass on the extra revenue with increased prize money on the day for the last 8 players, especially the Winner whose prize money increased by 75% from the standard £200. An super start to the season with the comp running smoothly and to schedule with a special mention to Simon ‘The Big Bear’ Wintle who is reducing his workload due to family commitments this season but has put in so much great work behind the scenes and continues to so now for the benefit of all the players.
